After a brilliant season last spring, the Dartmouth lacrosse team has run into difficulty this year and to date has split about even, winning five and losing six. Since last report Coach Tom Dent's squad lost to Syracuse 13-10 and defeated Middlebury 16-4, Hobart 11-4 and Colgate 17-4. They then dropped a close 9-8 decision to Yale and recovered to defeat Harvard 16-9.
At peak strength Dartmouth doubtless would have done better, but the lacrosse team has been plagued with injuries. Against Yale, regarded as one of the top teams in the East, Dartmouth was without the services of six top players - defensemen Randy Hayes and Zeus Stevens, midfielders Monk Spencer, Mike Battles and Steve Winslow, and attack man Ron Campion. Still the Indians managed to put up a good fight and lost out only in the last minutes of play by a 9-8 score.
Following the Yale contest, the Indians got back on the winning side by defeating Harvard 16-9. Midfielder Tim Anderson, who has been playing outstanding ball, scored four goals and had one assist to lead the Big Green. The game was an even one in the first half with Dartmouth's John Benisch scoring his second goal late in the second quarter to send Dartmouth into a 6-5 halftime lead. In the third period, with the score knotted at 7-7, Dartmouth broke into the lead on a goal by Captain Ray Lenhardt and then romped to an easy victory as two Harvard goalies were injured.
Contests with M.I.T. and Williams remain on the schedule before the season ends and Dartmouth should win both of these games for a better than .500 season record.
