This issue of the MAGAZINE marks the opening of the Alumni Fund campaign. Twenty-eight is again aiming for its usual place at the top of the list of all younger classes. Further details of plans for this year's drive will be forthcoming in that old gossip and scandal sheet, the '2B Campaigner.
These notes are being written in front of the cheery fireplace at the big new Dartmouth Outing Club's Ravine Camp at the base of Mt. Moosilauke. After a day of skiing on Hell's Highway we feel more like joining the Dartmouth and Wellesley students over in the corner singing, but these notes are three days late already and can't be put off. At a table in another corner Ross and Alice McKenney, Chick Evans, freshman basketball coach, and Larry Lougee '29 are playing a cutthroat game of cribbage. But the singing and the cribbage will be going long after our stint is finished.
The letter of the month is from Barrister and Midget Racing Tycoon Fran Young in Boston in reply to one from your Secretary. Fran denies being a racing tycoon, gives some interesting information about a new industry. "Midget racing," he says, "had its inception on the West Coast in the summer of 1933, when several garage mechanics for their own amusement put together very small cars powered by motorcycle engines or cut-down automobile engines. Tracks in California frequently draw crowds of 20,000 or more, and one track alone in New York had during its season a total attendance of around a quarter of a million and paid total prize money of about $60,000.
"With my brother, Princeton '37, I became interested in the sport or business in the winter of 1937, and to handle the matter we decided to incorporate the business, and now operate our cars under the name o£ Young, Incorporated. I believe that we are the only corporation in the country engaged in midget auto racing. We started out with a Bugatti powered racer, which after a few races 'blew up.' We then built a racer with a Ford motor and are now building another with a specially built motor called the 'Hal.' At present there is only one track operating in the eastern part of the country, and that is a board track at the New York Coliseum in the Bronx. However, I have just received a notice that races will be held at the Nutley Velodrome, Nutley, N. J., beginning Sunday afternoon, March 19. At that track a total of $l,OOO prize money is paid for each program of races, the money being divided into a number of prizes. There are various other tracks in the New York district on which we may operate this summer. These are at Union, N. J., Cedarhurst, L. 1., Freeport, L. 1., and possibly at Coney Island, N. Y.
"While our car was put into competition on tracks in the New York district last summer, as we were new to the game we were not particularly successful. We managed to recoup somewhat by returning to the New England tracks and securing a sufficient number of wins to cop the New England championship and make somewhat of a dent in the red side of our ledger." Thanks, Fran, for your letter and good luck in your racing this season.

Dartmouth Night on March 9 pried a number of 'aBers away from their firesides. We haven't heard from distant gatherings, such as those in Boston and New Jersey, but we can report from first-hand observation that six 'aBers ate a prodigious amount of beefsteak at the Dartmouth Club in New York that night. Present were: Jack Barry, Bill Monaco, Phil Orsi, Jerry Pitts, Jack Zellers, and your Secretary. Jack Zellers, who hops all over the country for Remington Rand, said he had just seen Loren Stevens and Chuck Davis in Chicago. Loren is with the Belknap Advertising Agency in the Jackson-Franklin Building. Chuck was found busily embracing an artist's model dummy in a Sears Roebuck window. Chuck plans all or a great many displays used by Sears stores throughout the country Merchandiser Jerry Pitts delivered a one-hour talk on the candy, soda, and food industry at a recent New York convention.*
On a recent trip to Hanover we met Jerry Cetrulo's father, Gerald Cetrulo, who coached the Dartmouth fencing team this year. The fencing team was host ten days ago to 175 fencers from 17 colleges participating in the intercollegiates. Jerry took a few days off from his medical practice in Newark, N. J., to watch some of the 1224 bouts, which were run off in two days continuously, with no stop night or day.
We were interested to read in the last issue of the Dartmouth College Library Bulletin that Dave McCathie, proprietor of the Sun Dial Inn, Port Jervis, N. Y. has given the library a number of items illustrative of the Victorian era. Incidentally, there is a society called Friends of the Library, the purpose of which is to improve the service of the library to the College. Membership is open to all alumni and friends of the College, and it is expected they will assist chiefly by increasing the library's stock of books, pamphlets, maps, and manuscripts, either by their own gifts or by suggestions made to others. Books thus contributed will be marked with a special bookplate with the name of the donor.
Red Sanborn and his wife were in Hanover recently, and he writes: "We spent a couple of very pleasant evenings at Bill Kimball's before we left. I even took in one of Prof. Ralph Burns' classes in education, posing as a student in open shirt and ski pants. It was hilarious. He counted an extra member in the class, but didn't spot who it was until after the class, and headed a very interesting discussion of methods in prep school education, of all things. I shrank down to a minimum and listened with four ears." Red is a math instructor at Phillips Andover Academy. You men who can get back to Hanover ought not to wait until our 15th before making the trip.
