The twenty sons of '28ers in the freshman class came very close to establishing a new record at Dartmouth. A1 Dickerson has informed us that it is only three short of the record of 23 set by the sons of the Class of 1923 in the Class of 1950. The names of the '28 sons entering this year were given in our October notes.
Larry Martin has been elected first vice president of the National Shawmut Bank of Boston. He was named a vice president in 1945 and vice president and chief loaning officer in 1951. When the announcement was made on Oct. 6 he was en route to Europe to study economic conditions in the NATO countries. Congratulations, Larry, on this recognition of your ability! Larry and Naomi and two of their three children attended the 25th Reunion.
Among the '28ers fortunate enough to see Dartmouth's first- football victory of the season, at New Haven of course, were: LeuBeers, Ernie Bessette, Bun Goodrich, John Flanagan, Art Gow, Ted Granville-Smith Hammie, Hammesfahr, Bill Heep, Chuck Hazzard, John Phillips, Son Middlebrook Bob Nespor, Herb Russell, Beef Vernon, Bud Weser and Cal Billings, whose eagle eye spotted the above-mentioned gentlemen.
Bun Goodrich is now chairman of the Board of Education of Newington, Conn., a town of over 10,000 population. He was elected to the board several years ag0.... Dick Wallis has moved from West Hartford to Lincoln Road, Kensington, Conn., to be nearer his job, which is manager of marketing of the American Paper Goods Co.
Budd Mating of Newark, N. J., has been elected to membership in the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, according to the October issue of the Appraisal Journal. Bank mergers are coming thick and fastthe latest, in today's newspapers, is that of the Providence-Union National Bank and Trust Company (Rupert C. Thompson, executive vice-president) and the Industrial Trust into a new bank called the Industrial Bank of Providence, which is now the second largest New England bank.
George Bell said at reunion last June that he and Paula hoped to return to China. Apparently they are now as near China as one can get —their new address is: Standard Vacuum Oil Co., Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank Bldg., Hong Kong, British Crown Colony. George has been with the same company since graduation, most of the time in China until the Commies took over. He lost two sets of worldly goods there, the first to the Japs in 1937 and the second to the Commies in 1941.
Earl McGrath has been named president of the University of Kansas City, Kansas City, Mo. For the past four years he had been U.S. Commissioner of Education and prior to that was a Professor of Education at the University of Chicago. Congratulations to the first '28 college president!
Al and Mabel McCune have moved from Chicago to 1211 East 9th St., Tucson, Ariz. Al travels for Rinn X-Ray Products Inc.... George Foster, manager of the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra for the past nine years, has moved to 180 Main St., Plymouth, N. H. Jerry Warner and family are now in Bangkok, Thailand, where Jerry is First Secretary of the American Embassy... . The Joe Smiths have moved from Coxsackie, N. Y., to 29 Hillside lane East, Syosset, Long Island. ... The Jack Carsons have moved to 645 Forest Ave., Evanston, Ill.
The New Hampshire Sunday News ran a large picture last August of Fred and AgnesTilton and their son, Fred Jr. and his bride, formerly Joan McIntyre of Laconia. The picture was taken in San Diego, with Fred Sr. looking very handsome in his Marine officer's uniform. Fred was called back for his second period of active duty on December 1, 1952, and is due to return to his law practice in Laconia this month. The younger Tiltons are both students at the University of New Hampshire, where Fred is vice president of the sophomore class.
Johnny Neary has accepted a new position with the Boston and New York advertising agency of John C. Dowd. For the past seven years he has been advertising manager of the Reid & Hughes stores and has been prominent in civic undertakings in Hamilton, Mass. rohnny will be assigned to the Boston office but his duties will entail extensive travel, according to the newspaper clipping. John has endeared himself to the Class by his co-editorship of the '28 Campaigner for the past four years and his witty comments on the passing scene.
Dick Welch has been appointed by the Mayor of Boston to serve as chairman with sixteen other South Boston civic leaders on a committee to assist in the rehabilitation of the area around Telegraph Hill.
We wish to thank Howie Payne for the best pictures of reunion yet received, including the line-up of past presidents which was used with our October notes.
Wes Patience, controller of the Millville Mfg. Co., Millville, N. J., writes us (for the first time in years) as follows:
"If you have studied numerology you will recognize the significance of 28. Now I have never been to the horse races myself and up until two weeks ago had never placed a bet. But there's a race course at Atlantic City about thirty minutes away, and after listening to some of our race track followers who put in a few days work at our plant, I decided to show them a little of the science of numbers and sent one lonely buck down for half a ticket on the daily double on number 28. Believe it or not the nags came in and paid $76.40, whch gave me some $35 after commissions. There's my alumni fund contribution for 1954!
"During the hot summer season I was a witness at a couple of I.C.C. hearings at Philadelphia. The lawyer for the Express Company looked familiar and talked our language, but it wasn't until halfway through a luncheon that I discovered it was BillMarx. He apparently enjoys his work and spends most of his time representing Railway Express before I.C.C. examiners in this area and in New England
"As an old Navy reservist still going to 48 drills a year and taking two weeks training a year, instead of vacation, I thought the family and I should see Annapolis. We will not mention the game but -the enclosed snap was taken for your benefit. Wearing those reunion caps is a great means of getting the gang together. Ace Anthony is looking the picture of health, although neither he nor his wife could say the same for the second-hand auto business. VicHartjens was enjoying the class' get-to-gether, but Jack Heston (probably because he was with an undergraduate son) seems to be covering his head with shame. Me, I took the picture. Someone seeing the '2B cap asked for the health of Bill Cogswell and I was able to report no shrinkage.
"Reunion was a great success and I thought rather an inspirational success. Do we have to wait for a financial drive or a reunion to get the group together like the meeting in New York or the one in Philly two years ago ? Can you not promote something for this winter before the spell wears off?"
Thanks for the letter and suggestion, Wes. We'll see what can be done. Meantime, let's hear from more of you fellows!
