THE General Education Board elected President Hopkins as its chairman at a meeting of the trustees of the Board in New York City on April 6. President Hopkins succeeds John D. Rockefeller Jr., who, under a provision of the by-laws of the board, has retired upon reaching the age of 65. Mr. Hopkins, who is 61 years old, has been a trustee since 1930.

The General Education Board was founded in 1903 by the late John D. Rockefeller, whose gifts to the organization amounted to $129,000,000. Its purpose was broadly described in the charter as "the promotion of education within the United States without distinction of race, sex or creed." Appropriations by the Board from principal and income to date have totaled $262,000,000, leaving a fund at present of $23,000,000.

Administration of the General Education Board is carried on by a full-time staff headed by President Raymond B. Fosdick, who is also head of the Rockefeller Foundation. As Chairman of the Board, President Hopkins will fill a policy-forming role and will preside at the two meetings of the board of trustees each year.
