U. S. Army Announces New ROTC Scholarships
MAY 1965

A COLLEGE ROTC scholarship program providing financial assistance to 1000 qualified students throughout the country has been announced by the Department of the Army, to become effective in September 1965. The Army ROTC Program is conducted in 247 colleges and universities, including Dartmouth, and produces over 10,000 officers for the Army each year. The importance of the program to the Army has brought about the addition of scholarships for the first time.

Authorized by the recently enacted Public Law 88-647, the ROTC Vitalization Act of 1964, four-year scholarships will be awarded to 400 students and two-year scholarships to 600 students. Four-year scholarships will be granted to individuals who are entering college for the first time. Two-year scholarships will be awarded to selected college students completing the second year of the four-year Army ROTC Program.

The Army will pay these students $50 a month plus their tuition, textbooks and laboratory fees for attendance at colleges with four-year ROTC programs. Payment of $50 a month will be made from the date the scholarships begin until graduation, to include summer months except for one six-week summer training camp where the student will be paid at the rate of $120.60 per month, plus transportation.

Upon graduation from college and the successful completion of their Army ROTC studies, the scholarship students are required to accept if offered either a Regular or Reserve commission as a second lieutenant and to serve at least four years on active duty with the Army. To be eligible for these scholarships, an applicant must be a male U. S. citizen who meets the prescribed physical standards. He must also enlist in the Army Reserve for six years at the time he accepts the scholarship.

The deadline for applications for 1965-66 scholarships was May 1, 1965. Dartmouth students interested in the two-year grants applied to Col. William R. Donaldson, USA, Professor of Military Science at the College. Applications for four-year scholarships were made to the Commanding General of the Army area in which the applicants reside. Successful applicants, chosen by the Department of the Army, will receive notification in July.

Alumni sons interested in the four-year Army ROTC scholarships after 1965-66 may obtain information from the Army Commander of their home areas, or may write directly to the U. S. Army ROTC Instructor Group at Dartmouth College.

Concerning the ROTC program at Dartmouth, Colonel Donaldson recently said: "The continued efforts of the College to offer a wide range of military science courses is adding to the College's record of graduating leaders in all walks of life by producing leaders in uniform. Defense responsibilities requiring increased qualities of military leadership are being supported by Dartmouth's contribution through ROTC."

At graduation exercises last June, 98 Dartmouth seniors received reserve-officer commissions upon successful completion of the Army, Navy and Air Force ROTC programs.
