ATTENDED BY 105 class and club repre. sentatives, the 35th annual meetings of the Dartmouth Secretaries Association were held in Hanover on May 12 and 13. Business sessions were held in the 1902 "Room of Baker Memorial Library on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, with the annual Association dinner held in Thayer Hall on Friday evening. F. William Andres '29 presided over the business meetings and acted as toastmaster at the dinner, at which President Hopkins and Robert W. Gibson '39, secretarychairman of the senior class, were the principal speakers.
Sidney C. Hayward '26, secretary of the College and of the Association, made the award for the best class secretary of 1939 jointly to Dr. Henry H. Piper '76 of West Medford, MassTPand the Rev. Myron W. Adams '81 of West Townsend, Mass. The award for the best club secretary during the past year went to Ford H. Whelden '25, secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Detroit, who was unable to attend the meetings. A framed etching of Baker brary was presented to each of the three secretaries.
Officers of the Association for the coming year were elected at Saturday's business session as follows: H. Philip Patey '98 of Newtonville, Mass., president; Osmun Skinner '2B of New York City, vice president; and Sidney C. Hayward '26 of Hanover, secretary-treasurer. Mr. Hayward was reelected editor of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, and Harold P. Hinman '10 of Canaan, N. H., was reelected to another three-year term as representative of the Association on the Alumni Council.
LiWilliam J. Starr '84 of Manchester, N. H., and Mansfield D. Sprague '33 of Bridgeport, Conn., were elected members of the Executive Committee, to serve with Messrs. Patey, Skinner and Hayward. Allan C. Gottschaldt '18 of Wellesley Hills, Mass., was elected to a three-year term on the advisory board of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
At the Saturday business meeting, largely devoted to MAGAZINE reports, the Association went on record as favoring the continuance of the 100% group-subscription plan, which has been adopted by some 40 classes and which during the past year has boosted the MAGAZINE circulation from 6,000 in 1937-38 to more than 10,000 at the present time. Speakers at the business sessions included Robert J. Holmes '09, Alumni Council representative; William H. McCarter '19, director of athletics; Dean Robert C. Strong '24, who spoke on admissions problems and policies; Prof. Herbert W. Hill, chairman of Hanover Holiday; Sumner B. Emerson '17, chairman of the Alumni Fund Committee of the Alumni Council; Harold P. Hinman '10, who discussed the group subscription plan; Norman Stevenson '05 business manager of the MAGAZINE; and Sidney C. Hayward '26, editor.
