with Partial Genealogies of theCox, Randall, Nutter, and PickeringFamilies and Biographical Sketches ofFour Brothers, Descendants of theseFamilies. Compiled by Louis S. Cox '96.Stephe7i Daye Press, 1939. pp. 235.
Interest for Dartmouth alumni in general in this volume of family history lies in the biographical sketches referred to in its title, for three of the four brothers here described are graduates of the College. Guy Wibur Cox '93, President of the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, has been for three decades a prominent and valuable member of the legal, business, and political circles of Massachusetts. Louis Sherburne Cox '96 (LL.D. Boston University '36), Justice of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts, has risen to his present high position through a progressively brilliant legal career. Channing Harris Cox 'Ol (LL.D. Dartmouth and Tufts '23), President of the Old Colony Trust Company, has given his adopted state remarkably able service in public office. Successively a member of the Boston City Council for two years and of the Massachusetts House of Representatives for nine years, serving as Speaker of the House for four terms, he was elected Lieutenant-Governor for two years (1919-20) and Governor for four years (1921-4). Unquestionably this trio of Coxes forms one of our most notable Dartmouth families.
For the specialist in New Hampshire genealogy the remainder of the book will also prove valuable. Mr. Cox has gathered during many years of research a great amount of information hitherto unprinted relative to the families of his ancestors, and has presented it here in accurate, usable form. F.
