WE OPEN THIS FIRST ISSUE of a new year just as the College itself begins—with the address of PRESIDENT HOPKINS at Convocation in Webster Hall on September 19. Highly informal (as have been previous opening addresses), President Hopkins' remarks are abstracted in this issue on page 12.
Beginning our second annual series of faculty biographical sketches, we present in this issue, on page 15, Leland Griggs, Naturalist, an intimate portrait of Dartmouth's professor of biology, known to hundreds of Dartmouth men as "Doc," written by PARKER MERROW '25, newly-elected secretary of his class and editor of the Carroll County (N. H.) Independent.
A Freshman Writes Home, edited by HERBERT F. WEST '22, should be of interest to all alumni of Dartmouth. This is a series of letters written by a real flesh-and-blood freshman last year to his parents, in which he unwittingly provided a superbly genuine description of the life of a Dartmouth yearling. His name is, of course, withheld. Turn to page 20.
With football again under way, readers will automatically turn to WHITEY FULLER'S review of Dartmouth sports on page 31. A full treatment of this season's players, prospects and possibilities provide background for following the Green on the gridiron during the coming two months.
