Defense Committees
November 1940

ACTIVITIES OF THE American Defense Dartmouth Group have been marked during the past month by the registration of some 500 students under the Conscription Bill and by the appointment of several sub-committees in further expansion of defense projects in the College. Speakers at a meeting in Dartmouth Hall, October 7, to explain the history, purposes, and actual details of operation of the Draft Law were Prof. Harold J. Tobin '17, chairman of the Dartmouth Group, and Prof. Howard Meneely.

Under the direction of Prof. Henry M. Dargan, chairman of the Group's sub-committee on military service, registration of undergraduates ai and over was accomplished in Thayer Hall, October 16. A large staff of registrars and secretaries sworn in for the occasion assisted in the work. Registration cards were then sent to the home towns of all student registrants. The membership of Mr. Dargan's subcommittee was announced to be the following members of the instruction and administrative staffs: Peter S. Cardozo '39, Lloyd K. Neidlinger '23, Artemas Packard, John B. Stearns 'l6, Wayne E. Stevens, and Dr. Radford C. Tanzer '25.

Other sub-committees have been established to take care of demands for public speaking and radio activity, work in connection with refugee children, a group to study wartime diplomacy and post-war security, and a press committee to prepare and secure publication of articles dealing with national defense and related subjects.

Membership of these sub-committees is not complete, but the appointments as announced to date are:

Committee for Study and Research on Wartime Diplomacy and Post-War Security: Arthur M. Wilson, chairman, William A. Robinson, George C. Wood, John G. Gazley, Bruce Knight, Paul Allen '26.

Committee on Public Speaking and Radio: Joseph M. McDaniel, chairman, Herbert W. Hill, Robert E. Lang '3B, Carl D. England, Warner Bentley, Allen R. Foley '2O, Robert K. Carr '29, Mrs. Harold J. Tobin.

Committee on Refugee Children: Charles R. Bagley, chairman, Mrs. Edla Bowen, Mrs. Harriet Gundersen.

Press Committee: William S. Messer, chairman, Earl R. Sikes, Herbert F. West '22, Arthur Dewing '25, Charles E. Widmayer '3O.

A large response was received in reply to questionnaires addressed to all members of the staffs of instruction and administration requesting volunteers for activities of the Defense Group. Numerous suggestions for expansion of plans were received, especially along the lines of the work assigned to Professor Wilson's committee on clarifying the issues and aims of the war and what the eventual peace terms and "new order" should be. It is hoped that reports of this and other sub-committees may be made available through the columns of this MAGAZINE or otherwise in order to keep Dartmouth men informed of results of the extensive time and thought being given to the question in the Dartmouth community.

A further expansion of the committees' work is expected in the direction of inviting undergraduates to participate in discussion groups with members of the faculty and collaboration in other ways on aspects of the work of the Defense Group.

In addition to Mr. Tobin, the members of the six-man executive committee of the American Defense Group at Dartmouth are: Dean E. Gordon Bill, Richard H. Goddard 'so, Sidney C. Hayward '26, Stearns Morse, and George F. Theriault '33.
