THE ANNUAL FALL MEETING of the Board of Trustees on October 20 resulted in two appointments to the medical faculty, the award of bachelor degrees to eight members of the Class of 1940, and the granting of leaves of absence to three faculty members. The major part of the meeting w as devoted to routine financial matters, including the Treasurer's report for 1939-40 and the budget for the present year.
The medical faculty appointments were those of Dr. Walter B. Lancaster of Boston as Professor of Ophthalmology and of Dr. Herman M. Burian of the Dartmouth Eye Institute as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. Dr. Lancaster is the new Chief of Staff of the Eye Institute.
Bachelor degrees as of the Class of 1940 were granted to Henry V. Chase Jr., Hercules, Calif.; Louis C. Chesley Jr., Manchester, N. H.; Robert E. Dibble, Kalamazoo, Mich.; John J. English, Washington, D. C.; Russell H. Gorman, Manchester, N. H.; John T. St. Mary, Malone, N. Y.; George c. Sheldon, Norwalk, Conn.; and Uiapman Wentworth, Wellesley Hills, Mass. . .
The Board granted leaves of absence to Prof. Malcolm Keir and Prof. Francis J. Neef for such portions of the present academic year as may be necessary for their full recoveries from illnesses. It also granted leave to Prof. Arthur N. Daniels of Thayer school for one year> beginning February 1, to enable him to report for officer's duty with the United States Navy.
As other matters of business the Trustees voted the appointment of Donald S. Smith, superintendent of the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, as Consultant on Group Hospitalization; ratified the appointment of Merwin Elwell as Technical Director of The Players; and ratified the re-election of Max A. Norton '19 as treasurer of the Athletic Council.

All the above members of the Board were present at the fall meeting with the exception of Mr. Minsch.
