This Month

WHITEY FULLER steals the show this month, blessed as he is with a football story unequalled in the annals of American sport. Luckily for us, the unbelievable surge of the Dartmouth Indians on that now famous Saturday against a tremendously favored Cornell team, Referee Red Friesell's admission of error in giving the Ithacans a fifth down and Cornell's gallant concession of the game to Dartmouth—all occurred in time for a "STOP PRESS" job to be found on page 19.

A biographical sketch of DR. JOHN F. ("J") GILE '16, Dartmouth's trustee and well-beloved north country physician, entitled Like Father,Like Son, is written by PETER S. CARDOZO '39, Instructor in English, and appears on page 13. Cardozo's article is one that needed writing for a long time; we think he has done a good job shaping the story of a father and son who have left an indelible impression on this valley.

What about the alleged softness, cynicism and disillusionment of American college students? For a new approach to this popular subject of discussion, see HUGH ELSBREE'S article, American Student Morale on page 9. The charge that our younger generation has been duped or subverted by professorial debunkers is given the once-over by one of Dartmouth's most respected and competent social scientists.

The reminiscences of ART KENDALL, janitor of New Hampshire Hall, are written up in a feature by ROBERT R. RODGERS '42 called Janitor's Life on page 16. HERBERT F. WEST'S book column, Hanover Browsing, appears this month on page 17. CHARLES G. BOLTE '41, our undergraduate editor, has written his fourth instalment of the Undergraduate Chair; turn to page 32.

The editors are most appreciative of the complete cooperation of WHITEY FULLER, the Athletic Council, The Dartmouth and many others who made possible our complete treatment of the Cornell game with a deadline hovering over us.
