WITHIN THE MEMORY of men of middle age has come the much greater solicitude of the alumnus for his college, as compared to any previous time. President 'Hopkins has said that the support of alumni will be the decisive factor in determining what may be Dartmouth's future.
There are two recent examples of the attitude of the modern alumnus, and these instances are charged with drama and tragedy. Bob Chase '39, son of Frederick Chase '05, made substantial bequests to his school, college, and fraternity before embarking on the Chinese junk in which he set out to cross the misnamed Pacific Ocean last spring. Richard Halliburton, Princeton '21, named his college the residuary legatee of his estate before leading the adventurous and fated expedition.
This thoughtful action is typical of the solicitous attitude of the loyal son who desires during life, and after, to have his full share done for the College.
