MEET BILL DANIELS, our feature article for this month, written by CHARLES E. WIDMAYER '30, meets for the first time in these pages a demand for an uncolored, genuine sketch of a representative Dartmouth undergraduate, A. D. 1940. No mythical, built-up statistical composite is Bill; he's a flesh-and- blood example of young Dartmouth today. For his reluctant willingness to be our guinea pig, our thanks. We think you'll find him likeable and interesting—page 11.

A letter to the Editor from Herbert L. Luques '82 in this issue asks a question which is answered opportunely on page 19, in RichMan's College?—by JOHN HURD JR., Assistant Professor of English. Unfounded statements as to the expense of a Dartmouth education have demonstrated the need for an examination of the problem, important to every Dartmouth man. Before preparing the article, MR. HURD interviewed President Hopkins and other administrative officers of the college. He also talked the general problem over with BILL CUNNINGHAM '19, nationally famous sportswriter, whose views on education for poor boys are defined in Concentrate on Excellence, page 28.

This issue incorporates the annual report of the 25th Alumni Fund. These features are listed in a separate table of contents on page 9. Class agents are making plans now for the 1940 campaign which will get under way this month.

HERB WEST'S column, Hanover Browsing this month contains a long list of good books for your library and bedside table, page 26. News of the College with its features on sport, Outing Club activities and the Undergraduate Chair, begins on page 36, and GradusAd Parnassum, Club, and Class Notes appear in their usual positions.

We feel honored in receiving permission to use a water-color by PAUL SAMPLE '20 as our cover picture in this issue. The familiar view, painted with fidelity to that ever-recurring Dartmouth scene, is called BetweenClasses. This water color and other paintings of Dartmouth scenes are on exhibition at the Ferargil Galleries in New York City.
