WITH MAJOR INTERESTS IN THE COLLEGE AS elsewhere keyed to National Defense the featured contents of this first issue of the year are largely concerned with the position of the College in the emergency. The address by PRESIDENT HOPKINS opening Dartmouth's 173rd year is published beginning on page 11 . The Probability of the Impossible is the subject of his convocation address -in Webster Hall last month.

Dartmouth Again Faces A World Crisis, by PROFESSOR WM. STUART MESSER, page 13 , reviews the attitudes and actions of undergraduates in their approach to World War I, and states the situation in Hanover as of the past year. MR. MESSER is vice chairman of the Committee on Defense Instruction, appointed by the Board of Trustees last spring to correlate the work of the College with National Defense. He is Daniel Webster Professor of the Latin Language and Literature.

Starting on page 18 is a description of out- of-door opportunities at Dartmouth. The author is Ross MCKENNEY, woodcraft adviser for the Outing Club. The article is the first of a series to be published this year relating the undergraduate careers of men who are setting high standards in the student body. The subject of this month's story is BILL SCHUMACHER '43, leader in year-round out-door activities, and a pre-medical student.

Dartmouth men know, by now, of the great success of the Anniversary Campaign of the Alumni Fund last spring. PRESIDENT LARMON of the Alumni Council transmitted the collections of $196,000 in a letter to PRESIDENT HOPKINS which is printed on page 20 , where MR.HOPKINS' reply also appears.

A review of new defense courses, page 23 , Hanoxier Browsing, page 21 , WHITEY FULLER'S prospectus for Coach "Tuss" McLaughry's first football season at Dartmouth, page 30 , are features of the issue.
