SECOND-GENERATIONERS .... Engagement of Eddie Wells to Barbara Mix, daughter of James U. and Helen Lees Mix, New York City, is announced. . . .in addition to studying medicine, Eddie is a ski instructor at Woodstock Alma Brady, Wellesley '38, has a fine position with an importing firm in New York where she speaks French, Italian, Spanish. .. .her father, our "King," was no second-rate linguist, having been able to talk "South Boston" with the best who ever came out of The Hub's southern areas Another South Boston gift to Dartmouth, The Great Tobe, is getting a big kick out of his son, Jack, who is going to town on the Ski Team this winter And still another one of our footballers, Larry Bankart, has a youngster skiing at Hanover. .. .while she can't qualify for the Ski Team, she is doing a grand job making future Dartmouth Greats out of the kiddies who come to Hanover for ski instruction Debby is a swell girl, and we enjoy seeing her quite frequently.
"Wid" Washburn, Harold's younger son, has just been honored with the football captaincy at Hanover High, an outfit which trimmed Lebanon High last fall.
... .Wid's a nice lad, 200 lbs., over 6 ft., basketball, orchestra, Honor Roll, heading for Dartmouth in a couple of years
Jack Everett, Jim's Phi Beta boy, celebrated his return to Hanover from a Naval Reserve Training cruise by picking up an all-spade hand, bidding a grand slam, being ing doubled and redoubled before calmly laying down his thirteen cards—and everyone present swore that it was on the level.
Lucy Sherman, third daughter of our Grinnell Chem. Prof. Leo, is teaching 7th and 8th grades at Principia Lower School in St. Louis, Missouri, her youngest sister being a Grinnell sophomore.. .. .Wilk's Christmas Greetings show those two comely young ladies, Jean and Sally, and their baby brother, Albert Crayton who is destined to become a Dartmouth Great of the future along with Jackie Hobbs.... some of us First Edition Tenners have to stay alive long enough to see and enjoy these lads during their undergraduate days at Hanover Ben Ames Williams Jr., was married Nov. 30 in Jamaica Plain to Jessie Ames, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Marshall.
For many years Thayer Smith's Christmas cards have recorded faithfully the expansion and annual growth of his very interesting family. .. .9 children. .. .6 boys, 3 girls.... the oldest boy being headed for Hanover this coming fall... .in these days of reduced families and the unwillingness of many couples to really make personal sacrifices for having and raising children, it's nice, and sort of faith-restoring to see folks like the Thayer Smiths not only raise a large household of youngsters but also have a whale of a lot of enjoyment and satisfaction in doing it.
MAC KENDALL ON AND UP AGAIN. . . .This Pompanoosuc-born-railroader of 1910 goes forward so rapidly that even the efficient Miss Charlotte Ford of the Alumni Records office cannot keep accurate addresses.
. .. .This time it is a brief notice from the General Manager of the Chicago & Northwestern, "Mr. L. B. Kendall, Superintendent, lowa Division, Boone, lowa. Effective December 1, 1940"....50 once again, about the steenth time in two years, the Kendalls move, but always onward and upward.... they've lived in Boone before but when Mac was there in a lesser capacity.... the family will remain in Madison until Dave finishes school in June, then in the Fall he'll come to Hanover to remain anchored four years while his folks peregrinate over rest of the Northwestern line.
STEAMING UP. .. .naturally, a lot of Dartmouth fathers and a lot of Dartmouth sons have their eyes on four undergraduate years for the latter on Hanover Plain, than which there is no better college location in the U. S. A we could write reams of facts defending that statement. .. .and additional reams about the good job President Hopkins, the Ad Building, the Faculty, the Athletic Department and rest of the staff are doing....not everything is perfect, no more than everything is perfect in one's family or one's business or profession. .. .but the total score is high enough to give a composite Rufus Choate rating for Dartmouth College in its curricular ricular and extra-curricular entirety
Our perspective of Dartmouth from peaceful, enjoyable Canaan Street is excellent, not near enough to be cynical or inanely critical, and not far enough away to lose some of the finer contacts with the place .... there are some mighty fine kids at Hanover, and what they are doing would open the eyes of some of you old bucks .... a lot more lads could go there if somewhere along their later high and prep school days, someone would show enough kindly and sincere interest in Dartmouth requirements (and they're not too difficult) and the boys' standings to help them steam up.

A CLASSIC. .. .Little did the Norton Cushmans, Andy Scarlett, Clarke Tobin, Harold Washburn and your Secretary (and they were the only Tenners present as far as we have been able to learn) realize that they were to witness an all-time, national classic when they wrapped themselves up in overcoats, greasers, tarpaulins for venturing forth in the rain-sleet-light snow flakes to see Cornell paste Dartmouth to a fareyou-well. .. . saner folks probably would have remained at home
In the 1st Quarter you crawled into your hole, your teeth chattered and you couldn't believe your eyes at what was happening on the gridiron in front of you.
In the 2nd Quarter you regained your sensibilities enough to stick your neck out of your hole and speak to your neighbor.
At the Half you stood and shivered, not really believing what you had seen . . . .and you sat down again, knowing that those Cornell Giants would just plain come back and mop up.
During the Third Quarter you began to get quite bold, and started watching that clock with prayerful eyes. . . .by now you knew those .Dartmouth lads were doing something down there on the field but 99 and 9/10% of us spectators weren't smart enough to know what the technique was.
In the Fourth Quarter you yelled and cheered and begged and watched the clock.
.... What slashing, fighting playing our lads were putting forth. .. .an awe-inspiring spectacle to behold.... you shivered and chattered and shook more than ever . .. .the tension was terrific. .. .then your prayer was answered with The Fourth and Final Down. . . .but NO, what the Devil was up. .. .you saw Lou Young say something to Friesell. . . .you saw one of the officials start for the 20-yard line with the ball....then in a Mental Fog, you saw The Historic Fifth Down with a Touchdown handed to Dartmouth's opponents .... and the Whistle with few realizing just what had taken place.
But later around Hanover the Momentum increased. .. .in the Gym, in the Field House, on the Campus, at The 1nn.... you heard all sorts of pleadings and arguments, and even curses if you must know ... .yet sanity prevailed But wait, the Movies will tell, they'll GIVE THE TRUTH, they'll back up the records of some 20 or more skilled newspaper reporters .... and they did!
So....Nort, Andy, Tobe, Harold and your Sec'y were your delegates at the great football classic of 1940!
HAP GOODERE ... .As a shock to the Class will be the news of Hap's passing away in Chicago on Sunday, Dec. 8.... Although we have been unable to obtain details of his illness, we are able to give an obituary which you will find in the Necrology section.
