There's so much to write about this month that we scarcely know where to start.... but we do know that with wartime space limits in the MAGAZINE, we cannot do justice to many items.

The class of 1910 climbs into the exclusive $100,000 Club Andy Scarlett goes to Europe New Destroyer named for Ernie Small Kid Fowler dies.

Naming a New Super-Destroyer for ErnieSmall is no small honor in itself for insofar as we have ever been able to learn he was Dartmouth's first Rear Admiral. In place of Clarke Tobin who was unable to attend the launching, Tom and Harriet Foster represented the College and class at the exercises, which were a fitting testimonial to a great Naval officer and a man who never lost his interest in Dartmouth.

The class responded splendidly to Andy Scarlett's appeal for the Fund and sent him to Europe with the knowledge that 1910 had reached the $100,000 Group .... which prior to this year had only four members, two classes of which were there by virtue of sizeable gifts. Of us, 179 men gave $7,677 for an all-time 1910 Fund total of $100456.70. Nice work and thanks to everyone!

Very suddenly in the midst of the Fund's closing days, Andy was notified by the War Department of his selection to teach chemistry in the G.I. college in England and France hectic days followed with physical examination, uniforms and a thousand and one details.... but Andy sailed out of New York harbor on the Queen Elizabeth early in July for seven months abroad. The College, class and his friends can take much satisfaction in having such a splendid fellow and teacher represent them in this important educational program.

Doc Foster in Chicago for American Medical Association had delightful luncheon reunion with Shorty Stern and Tom Heneage .... to

quote the kindly Portland medico, "They are very attractive gents and the same excellent companions. Shorty has changed little, is quiet and modest as ever with a collegiate figure. Tom looks like the dignified and successful man you see in the Calvert whiskey ads but he doesn't have any drink in his hand."

Win Nay lives at 948 Leslie Drive, San Gabriel, Calif., and Sumner Lloyd has retired out there with address Box 2274, Laguna Beach, Calif Jimmie Frame, mining and civil engineer, claims Clayton, Ga., as his home, but can be reached at 449 Federal Building, Albany, N. Y Andy Scarlett had a nice letter from Chet Scott of Walla Walla, Wash Mr. and Mrs. Herb Wolff attended launching of SS "Rogers Blood" at Hingham, Mass., as guests of Bob Blood '06, father of Rogers .... the two young Dartmouth friends, Rogers and Herb. Jr. were together in several Marine invasions Rogers was killed and Herb wounded at Eniwetok. Herb is now back in this country suffering from filiariasis, the tropical sickness.

Kid Fowler's death was a great shock to everyone, for somehow he was a fellow we didn't associate with death.... space once again doesn't permit us to write what we would like .... so we'll quote a letter from Ted Smith who was thoughtful enough to supply us with many newspaper clippings and details: "Such fine, true fellows as Kid Fowler are not in abundance. Whenever I met him and had a visit, I was always sorry to have him leave. That is why he had a host of friends who really loved him."

Our Youngsters are doing a grand job in this war .... their loss of life is heavy and deplorable Lt. (jg) Jerry Sheets, son of Ray, was killed on the Laffey off Okinawa April 16, the young man having had a most admirable record at Normandy, Leyte, Manila, Mindanao, Okinawa .... the letter from his commanding officer, Commander F. J. Becton, to his parents is really a beautiful testimonial to a very fine and brave young man.

Bart Nourse is taking advanced flying at Pensacola; Jimmy is in Philippines; Ken will be eighteen next January., Tom Keith was wounded three times in Belgium; Roger Noone is master sergeant in ATC at Honolulu; his sister is abroad with Foreign Red Cross .... Bill Field pilots a B-17 flying the "Hump" from India to China .... Jack Tobin is back in this country after twenty-two months of submarine service in the far Pacific .... Frank Meleney Jr. joined the Navy at age of seventeen. .... Married October 28, 1944, Meriel Emerson to Earle H. Pierce Jr. Dick Wolff entered Dartmouth last month .... Deborah Bankart who has seen no little of this war, went with her unit from Italy to Germany John J. Downey II graduated from Massachusetts Maritime after eighteen months as midshipman, is second assistant Engineer, has seen lots of European shuttling service. .... Nancy Downey Gibson lives with Joe and wife, works at Navy Department while her husband is with Marines in South Pacific. Priscilla Allen's husband is back from Europe en route to the East.
