We still have a tidy little pile of notesheets bearing scribblings gathered during our eastern exodus of last month, which we'll get into before tackling other news.
NEW FACES FOR 1941
On the back of a menu from a Boston restaurant are comments on two more of the class progeny. The first of these, which reads:
"TURNER has a daughter—Wollaston," we haven't verified, nor do we recall whether "Wollaston" is her name, her birthplace, her first word, or what, but we're glad she's with us. Just below the above, on the same sheet, is a comment advising us to:
"Check on the SMITH baby—." Our records have since been completed on this one, so that we can now report that on and after November 29th one David Ritchie Smith has been sharing quarters with DAVE AND ELEANOR SMITH out in Berkeley, California, giving them a blue to pair off with their two and a half year old pink.
BILL CLARK makes us feel better about our football prospects for 1960-62 with news of the birth of Peter Gordon Clark on December 10th. Meanwhile, we reserve comment on his further statement that he and Helen
"have adopted a half Persian kitten—extremely playful—temperamental—tigerish!Officially baptized 'GILLY.' Still referred toas SHE—no reflections!" And to think that we suffered all through senior year rooming with a guy like that. To bear such a cross at our age is a little too much.
Then along comes the good Friar NARAMORE with news that the bells of the Temple Naramore are ringing to herald the arrival of a new choir boy, Robert Burling Naramore"the middle name after mybrother, who may be rich some day andmight be inclined to bestow a few financialfavors on a namesake," which shows a progression, in five years, from the Friar's former concern with pollyantics to a present concern with practicalities. There's progress for you. Score to date for the Nara- mores is one pink and one blue, even Steven.
When we add to these arrivals the fact that BIG JOHN LYON'S third daughter arrived on October 26, down in Harrisburg, we are sure that Les Dekes prolifiques better get going on that new house of which they've talked so long.
That all honors proligerous aren't confined to the West Wheelock Street Wimpies is evident from the news that, as the old year went out, LOU NILES was awaiting word of the arrival of the third small Niles. Added to that, 808 LOVEGROVE has just had another daughter, this one named Cynthia, down in Bridgeport.
PANAMA HATTIE (with apologies to ColePorter)
PERRY WACHTEL tells US that ED HENRIQUEZ and his wife have just returned to their home in Colon, Panama after three months vacationing here in the States.
THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (apologies toKatherine Hepburn)
REG BANKART moved down from Newton to Philly on the first of January to carry on for Aluminum Corporation selling cooking equipment to hotels.
COMRADE X (apologies to Clark Gable) Just before we went east last month we received the following card from Providence, Rhode Island: "Was married September 21, 1940 to MissJane Borland of Monongehela, Pa. That'sall the news.
"JOHN."
So fine, good, that's great, John, but whoare you? We showed your message to several of the boys in Boston and New York, personally investigated quite a few Eastern Johns, but we're still uncertain of the identity of Comrade X. Nonetheless, our greetings and good wishes to Madame X. She's already one up on us; she knows, we presume, just who Comrade X is and where.
BOYS & GIRLS TOGETHER (apologies to EdWynn )
ARNOLD WASHTON and Helene Sternberg were married December 26th. JIM, HIGGINS and Edyth Wright, of Brunswick, N. J., were married October 15th. CARL SPENGEMAN and Esther Beebe the same on October 26th, in Montclair, N. J. BILL RUSSELL adds Miss Dorothy Lippincott to our roster following their wedding November 16th in Red Bank, N. J. While the Big Green Team won a nice old wooden cigarstore Indian by beating the Cornells that day, Bill won himself a bride. Once again the sheerpracticality of the Class of '35 comes forth.
FLIGHT TO THE WEST (apologies to ElmerRice)
SVEN KARLEN has moved out to San Francisco from New York. He is still with Time magazine, on the advertising end. It was in keeping with the military tempo of the times, that Sven's engagement to Catherine Booth, great-granddaughter of General Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, was announced on Armistice Day. He will return east for the wedding next June.
CABIN IN THE SKY (apologies to Ethel Waters)
A recent issue of Squeaks from theGolden Gate, monthly journal of the Northern California Alumni Association, informs us that JOHNNY ELLIS is the lad largely responsible for detailed plans of construction and maintenance of the cabin the D. O. C. of N. California is building on their mountain property.
TIME MARCHES ON (no apologies)
We note that the publication A Description of Dartmouth College no longer carries pictures of our class under headings of "Old Timers' Day, A Senior Tradition," and "Students, headed by Palaeopitus, leaving Webster Hall after Convocation Exercises." In keeping with the times the former subject has been removed entirely, and the latter shows the Class of '40. Goneand forgotten.
SQUARE PEG IN SQUARE HOLE DEPARTMENT
808 FERRY has left Young & Rubicam to go with Guyer, Cornell as account executive for SCHLITZ BEER. It is little things like this which convince us that each one has his proper place here in the pasture, and that there is merit to a fatalistic philosophy. Could it also mean free beer for our 10th Reuion?
808 SMITH, another Smalley veteran, is doing publicity for Birdseye Foods.
