The way the boys have been going through you'd think this town was having a boom: First there was Bill Morgan of International Paper. He took time out from his round of conferences to break bread with us at the Boston Alumni Dinner. The plain Bostonians there included Dick Joh?ison, Chris Born, Bob Brinkerhoff, Hank Stein, Frank Foster and JoeO'Leary. Then, the other day Jack Hubbard, representing large financial interests paid a visit. But is Boston easy picking? He says No. Anyway he wasn't dismayed and promised to come back another day. For a full month we have the pleasure of Trunkie Brittan, a c.p.a. fellow, associated with the advertising firm of Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn. He's accompanied by his wife, lives in a fashionable apartment hotel and established and supervises a new accounting system in the Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn Boston office. He's a much travelled man, all excellent accountants are. And permanently here is Dick Sanders, old Corduroy trousers, himself, forsaking his Minnesota haunts and position with the wholesale department of the St. Paul Book 8c Stationery Cos. for a fine new job with J. L. Hammett Cos., the nationally-known school supply house. Dick has relocated his household consisting of his wife and two sons; Richard, 71/2 and Robert 3, at 101 Fresh Pond Parkway, Cambridge. Then just this morning John Dickey up from Washington for the day, calls to report enthusiastically about his new job and associates in the office of Coordinator of Commercial and Cultural Relations.
Further afield, Fran McEntee, president of the Dartmouth Club of Southern California, reports: "During a few days of skiing at Yosemite, I saw Charlie Proctor, who is a very busy director of winter sports there Between Dartmouth gather- ings, I manage to put in a little time at my law office. Under the pressure of a growing family, Anna and I have found our domestic life expanding through successive stages of a one-room apartment in the downtown area, 'just a short walk from the office;' a little larger flat a little farther out when Johnny was born in 1937; a little larger house in the nearest suburb of South Pasadena when Jimmy came along in 1939; and finally a little larger 'home of our own' still farther out—making a new change of address to 1409 Pasqualito Drive, San Marino, California, where the latch is out to all good 'agers who follow the sun to California. Another young lawyer in the Los Angeles area is B. Howard ('RED') Robison who, after taking his LL.B. at the University of Southern California, has been commuting to Omaha on business for several months. While 'way back east in Nebraska' he saw Fred Martin who is now in the coal business in Chicago. Howard and Velma are living in their new home at 141 Gunston Drive in West Los Angeles, with their two daughters, Gail, aged 3, and Joan, aged 1. Howard's current sport is swimming in which he indulges the year 'round. NoelSalomon just phoned in that he expects to be at the 'Fifth Down' party and will bring Dan Luten with him. Both Noel and Dan are in the accounting department of General Petroleum Corporation. Following Bob Collins' marriage to Mildred Spicer at Santa Ana last October and their honeymoon through the great Northwest, Bob and Mildred have landed at 1570 Oak Avenue, Evanston, Illinois, where Bob will take up his law practice. Ed Plumb is best covered by a news item from our local Club news: 'Burbank—Busiest of the 4-Man Dartmouth backfield at Walt Disney's Studio currently is Ed Plumb, '29, veteran musician and arranger, L. Stokowski's right hand man on the musical end of Fantasia which premiered at Carthay Circle on January 29. In addition to work at the theatre, Ed is struggling over new numbers to be inserted in concert-films in future. Tasks occupy him approximately eighteen hours per day, leaving him little time for visits with wife and infant, or for plans of house which he hopes sometime to build in valley.' "
To the irresistible Heath, himself, goes the credit for the following notes on Messrs. Baehr, Goudey, and Hetfield:
Data received at 27-28-29 class dinner held Jan. 29, 1941 at Dartmouth Club, New York City.
Ted Baehr Dapperer than ever, gave the following account of himself. Living at 46th St. and Park Ave. for the winter with his wife and 4 year old daughter. Prior to playing the part of a Dartmouth Professor in the movie Winter Carnival (thanks to Walter Wanger) he starred in several Westerns and with Grace Moore in LoveMe Forever. Says he hasn't worked in pictures since Winter Carnival and wonders if there is any connection. Last summer he acted with a stock company at Harrison, Maine, and in the fall put the Paper Mill Playhouse, Millburn, N. J. on the map. Also last fall appeared with Miriam Hopkins on Broadway in the Theatre Guild production called Battle of Angels and later with A 1 Sheean in a play entitled Popsy.
Russ Goudy back from Buenos Aires ten weeks ago he is now working at the N.B.C. studios in New York City as a musical director and composer. In South America he also directed broadcasts and says it only took him 8 months to learn how to defend himself fluently in the Spanish language.
Sonny Hetfield sworn in ten days ago as judge of Court of Common Pleas for Union County, N. J. This is the New Jersey court of unlimited original jurisdiction (including murder in the first degree) and he admits he is (and looks) the youngest Hizzoner ever to grace that important bench. He has a five year tenure so the boys will have to commit any felonies promptly if they expect mercy from said Court.
The Bob Tunnells have another son, William Thomas, born Feb. 9th. His brother is Robert Jr., 22 months.
Bob Conrad who received his AB at University of lowa in '2B and the JD degree in 1932 was married Oct. 15, 1939 to Martha Ekdale of Burlington, lowa. Bob is a member of the law firm of Conrad and Conrad.
Saw Kier belatedly reports the arrival of Kathleen Spencer Kier on July sth last.
Bill Dodge of Montreal extends an open invitation to all passing through on skiing trips to the Laurentians to visit the five Dodges, and insures liquid and solid nourishment to all comers.
Ray Talbot has been associated with the Stamford Federal Savings & Loan
Association since January 1.
Nick Nickerson became an assistant vice president of the Chemical Bank 8c Trust Company, New York, January 16.
Art Clifford lives in Belmont, Mass., does the bossing of 11 girls and 9 men at Hathaway's Bakeries, Inc., boasts a fair credit rating and same old Hanover weight and girth but gets ecstatic on the subject of Susan, 19 months, full of tricks and long undistinguishable words.
Herb Ball has come to life; yes, in Washington, too, where he is doing defense work as an attorney for the R.F.C and its subsidiary corporations "Defense Homes", Defense Plant". His present specialty is the insurance problem of the Defense Program, to the solution of which he has just contributed the drafting of a blanket policy on all defense plants financed by the R.F.C.
Old Doctor Cavanagh is getting brittle, too. On a recent skiing weekend in Hanover, disregarding icy conditions and age, he tried just one too many runs. The ski patrol loaded him on a toboggan. He was in Dick's House briefly and then went back to New York with a cast up to his hip. A splendid way for a family man to spend a vacation.
Herb Bissell has broken up the original Bissell-Bertch Brinkerhoff-Bankart, N. W.Ayer combine by taking a new job as advertising manager of Electric Auto-Lite Cos., Toledo, Ohio.
Van Jamieson is well under way again. For the past two month he has been plan ning and organizing the Fund Campaign and the regional class agents. More than ever before the institution that is
Dartmouth needs our support in every way. And no man in the Class is more deserving of the encouragement that our support will give than Van.
Fund Contributors for 1940 Contributors: 345 (74% of graduates). Total gifts: $2,541.14 (80% of objective). VAN NESS JAMIESON, Class Agent.
