Dartmouth Fur

Ross McKENNEY, woodcraft adviser for the Outing Club and former president of the Maine Guides Association, is back at a familiar task. Accompanied by a helper Ross left the comforts of his Hanover home for three weeks of winter camping and trapping in the Dartmouth Grant. With the help of 60 steel traps and years of experience in Maine he took advantage of the open season on beaver the last two weeks in March. His domain was the 27,000 acres of wilderness in northern New Hampshire granted to the College by the State back in 1807. His object was to take a limited number of beavers only from colonies that are damaging new growth timber with their ambitious building of ponds. Proceeds from sale of beaver skins taken by McKenney will go to the College and we'll report results in the next issue.

Pulp and lumber reaped from the Grant have long been a source of substantial income for the College. This is the first time, however, that a crop of Dartmouth-owned fur has been harvested.
