ACUSTOM OF LONG STANDING IS CONTINUED with the publication of this Undergraduate Issue. We lead with a cover photograph by WENDOVER NEEFUS JR. '42 of Hudson, N. Y., showing GEORGE H. LOWDEN, sophomore, of Roselle, N. J., preparing to take off on a flight in the Civil Pilot Training course given to Dartmouth students at the White River Junction airport. WENDY NEEFUS is one of the two student staff photographers for the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, the other being RICHARD C. JACHENS '41, of Leonia, N. J. They have collaborated with CHARLES G. BOLTE '41 to produce the picture-story of student life called HanoverSwings With the Seasons, starting on page 11.

With screaming headlines and blaring radios describing every development in the world emergency, and thoughts turning inevitably to the crisis in their own lives, undergraduates welcomed an open letter from the American Defense Dartmouth Group last month. Electives were extended a week in order to give students more time to attempt to relate their courses of instruction for next year to defense activity. The Committee's letter is printed in full on page 9 and The Dartmouth's editorial comment on page 10.

What of the Senior Fellows is the title of the description of the work of Dartmouth's privileged senior group, written by one of the FeIIows—THEODORE WACHS JR. '41. CRAIG KUHN '42 traces the growth of interest in Camp William James in neighboring Vermont, and its recent tribulations, page 18.

Hanover Browsing, page 20, this month is contributed by undergraduates. And don't overlook the story by BOB RODGERS '42 about your old friend Tony the Barber, page 23. CHUCK BOLTE'S last installment of The Undergraduate Chair begins on page 26.
