OVER the years the ALUMNI MAGAZINE has reported many gifts to Baker Library through The Friends of the Dartmouth Library. The fruitful efforts of this organization, fifteen years old this spring, have resulted in an amazing total of literary riches for the College. Prof. Herbert F. West '22, founder, moving spirit and secretary of The Friends, has been asked to tell the story of the organization. His article, Baker's Friends (Page 13), is an anniversary summing up that deserves the admiration of all alumni.
Sherman Adams '20, chief assistant to President Eisenhower, has been the subject of numerous profiles in recent months, but his undergraduate days at Dartmouth have received only passing mention. Robert S. Monahan '29, a close friend, rounds out the picture with The College Days of Sherman Adams (Page 17).
Another special contribution this month is the story of The Dartmouth Lotteries (Page 20) by Philip G. Nordell '16, who for the past ten years has been digging into the history of this once popular way of raising funds for colleges and other institutions.
