WILLIAM J. MINSCH 'O7, of New York City, was nominated for his second five-year term as an Alumni Trustee at the annual fall meeting of the Dartmouth Alumni Council, held at the University Club in Boston, October 16. Dr. T. Donald Cunningham of Denver, presided at the meeting which was attended by Dartmouth graduates from all over the country.
The main question under discussion was whether or not the College should lower its requirements for admission in view of the prospect of shrinking enrollment. The topic was brought up at this meeting because this year's freshman class is the smallest since 1928, while other colleges are matriculating record numbers. After a lengthy discussion, it was urged upon President Hopkins and other College officials that the College's selective system be continued.
Among the speakers at the all-day session were Dr. Hopkins, who gave an "offthe-record" talk on war problems; Lloyd K. Neidlinger '23 dean; William H. McCarter 'l9, director of athletics, who praised the role of football and other contact sports in wartime; Carl F. Woods 'O4, of Boston, president of the Dartmouth Athletic Council, who paid tribute to Coach "Tuss" McLaughry on the eve of the Harvard-Dartmouth game; Dean Robert C. Strong '24; Albert I. Dickerson '3O, Alumni Fund Secretary; and Mrs. Elizabeth Hayward manager of Dartmouth dining halls, who described the problems of feeding 1000 Naval Training School officers in addition to all the freshmen and many hundred upperclassmen.

FRED C. SHANEMAN '24 Tacoma Mr. Shaneman succeeds E. Patrick Kelly 'O9 of Seattle as Alumni Council member from the Pacific Northwest for a first term of two years. After graduating from Dartmouth he worked with the Lukens Iron and Steel Company, later with the Great Western Electrochemical Company and since 1930 with the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Company of which he is now vice president and western manager with headquarters in Tacoma, where he manages a new company plant. HUBERT A. DES MARAIS '26 San Francisco Mr. Des Marais will serve a first term o£ two years on the Alumni Council, filling the new position on the Alumni Council from the Pacific Coast District.
