WRITER OF THE MONTH
Here's some inside dope on that Pearl Harbor affair from a guy who knows. The writer of the month for March is Herb Mattlage, recendy of the U.S.S. Arizona. "It must be a very helpless feeling to be so far away wondering if a fellow is still alive. The reports about me were not true, because I managed to come through a lot better than you heard, but it wasn't as easy as it sounds. I was very darned close to all the trouble, in fact, I was right in the middle of it. Only one thing saved me from a lot more trouble and that was that I happened to stay ashore Saturday night with three other fellows. This made me get back to the ship after the affair had gotten under way and it was possible to see what was coming at me all the time. I was out in a motor boat in the middle of Pearl Harbor when the second heavy attack started and if you don't think that was a warm spot!! Well, I looked around and took in all the action until a Jap plane almost landed on the boat—it seemed so close that I could have reached up and touched it. Then I hit the deck and stayed there for a few minutes. It would be foolish to say that I wasn't scared because it was a terrible experience. The whole affair was something which I couldn't comprehend. It was so far out of my imagination that,—until I thought of what might happen if one of those little pellets dropping out of the sky came near me,—l didn't think to be afraid. Then after I realized, I reviewed my whole life and thought of all the pleasant things that had come my way. I am safe and although a h— of a lot of shrapnel and other assorted bits of ironware came my way, nothing seemed to find me for a resting spot."
THE CLEARING HOUSE
Always glad to correct an erroneous statement, it is a pleasure to report that Gene King was not drafted in the Army, as mentioned in the January issue. Gene enlisted and is now attached to the Headquarters Battalion, 39th Field Artillery, Fort Lewis, Wash.
Because of an effort to conserve paper, the ALUMNI MAGAZINE has informed me that the '39 notes will be cut down by one third, but it doesn't mean that there is any need to cut down on the news. Keep the letters coming in this direction and we'll see what we can do about cramming more news into less space.
And how about a picture or two, to add a touch of color?
