PROF. WILLIAM STUART MESSER of the classics department has been named chairman of the American Defense Dartmouth Group by President Hopkins to succeed Prof. J. Milton McDaniel Jr., who resigned
in January because of the pressur of other outside duties. Professor Messer, who is Daniel Webster Professor of the Latin Language and Literature, will hold this new post along with that of vice-chairman of the faculty Committee on Defense Instruction, which is headed by President Hopkins. He first became active in college defense work as chairman of the Defense Group's sub-committee on press and writing.
The American Defense Dartmouth Group, formed a year and a half ago, was one of the first such college units in the country. It strongly supported President Roosevelt's foreign policy from the beginning and has served as a central clearing agency for all Dartmouth defense and war activities other than those related to the curriculum.
