THROUGH the generosity of Thomas W. Streeter 'O4, Baker Memorial Library has received a collection of nearly 500 railroad pamphlets dealing mainly with railroads in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, together with a few pamphlets relating to Massachusetts railroads which enter New Hampshire. These cover the period from 1840 to iB6O. The collection includes annual reports of the various railroads to their stockholders; early surveys of railroads, many with maps; hearings before legislative bodies; and pamphlets relating to legal controversies and disputes.
In the collection Mr. Streeter has given to Dartmouth are 168 railroad pamphlets relating to New Hampshire, 118 to Vermont, 132 to Maine and 75 to Massachusetts.
Many years ago, William H. Chase '5B, a Trustee of the College and a law partner of Mr. Streeter's father, Frank S. Streeter '74 who was also a Trustee, gave the Dartmouth library a collection of several hundred items largely relating to New England railroads. In this earlier collection there are 3a New Hampshire railroad pamphlets of the period 1840-1860 not found in the collection given by Mr. Streeter. The two collections will be brought together, the duplicates withdrawn, and the combined collection known as the Chase-Streeter Collection. Together they form probably the largest collection in the country of early railroad material relating to Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
