That Dear Uncle Mo Heath is still our (meaning yours and mine, not just mine) favorite hockey player and news commentator is amply demonstrated again by the following direct quotations from his latest manuscript:
"Reporting in from this ghost townGotham-there is nothing exciting happening at this moment; nobody is bombing us yet, and the city hasn't been laid siege to, yet. However we are expecting these thrills any day. The only changes I have noticed in New York City since the war began are (1) the many new uniforms around (most of them looking for trouble), (2) the many fruitless attempts to establish a central air-raid siren for the whole cityeach one a dismal flop (I'm writing the Mayor to borrow the Baker Hall Carillons for this purpose, they were loud enough to get us to church on Sundays!) (3) the weather eye everyone keeps out for airplanes—when one passes over we all stare like we used to in 1925, then prepare to duck and (4) the absence of '29 men. New York is really a ghost town, peopled with women, children and old men the young '29ers have all gone off to war, the latest to leave is Lougee. He called up the other night to say goodbye and reported that he was then and there leaving for Camp Roberts, California to join a Mountaineer Infantry Regiment. After 13 weeks basic training there, he goes to Fort Lewis, Washington. In a later, conversation with Ginter Pratt he said that all members of this regiment are picked by the National Ski Patrol, based upon past performance on "the boards"; that it is a new type of regiment never before developed in the Army and hard to get into and that its work is to be concentrated in the mountains. (We who have looked upon the Grand Tetons will join the Navy.) Ginter's outfit, by the way, is handling the publicity for Larry's regiment (which I suppose they are building up as the U. S. counterpart of the Northwest Mounties) and he (Ginter) is just off on a 6-weeks trip across the continent and back on this business, touching San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Des Moines, Chicago and New Orleans en route. Larry said by the way, that he had seen Red Hein at the National Sportsman's Show (Red was competing in the crow-calling contest) who reported that he had just established a home for convalescents (and chickens) at Sunapee Lake, N. H., and would welcome any normally decrepit '29- ers at any time. By the way, Van Jamieson wants you to advertise the fact that sometime in April, probably before the 15 th, '29's Annual Mammouth Spring Frolic will be given, consisting of a dinner at the Dartmouth Club, New York City, personal invitations will be sent out soon, this being a 'stand-by' notice.
"In view of the increasing number of '29ers in the Army and Navy I think you ought to enlist the wives to contribute to your good column. They could forward publishable parts of letters from their old men and otherwise add to the length (no offense, ladies) and lucidity of your column. Of course you might get some pretty strong opinions about the brethren if you did this and I doubt if you could hold them down to anything less than a page, but it's an idea you are welcome to use provided you take all the blame!"
The Boston Traveler's leading sport columnist recently ran a full length story on Larry Lougee's new Army career pointing to the fact that an established New York lawyer of 35, through a continuing interest and activity in the pursuits learned and followed as a Dartmouth undergraduate, was able and eager to become a skifighter in the U. S. Army. Of the 60 members of the D. O. C. of New York, Larry is the 18 th to enter the mountaineering infantry, soon to be followed by eight more.
Bill Weiler has just enlisted in the Army and is off for Camp Upton. He's leaving a full-time teaching job at Hunter and a part-time one at Columbia, both of which are being held for his return. Work for his Ph.D. is all completed save writing of book, which can, he says, await the outcome of his present assignment. He farewells "Hope to see you in (censored-not 'Hades.' Ed.) Luck!"
Rog Turnbull has left his bank to take a position in the Cost Department of the G. JE. River Works in Lynn. He has a boy, 6 and a girl, 3.
Woodsman-author Bob Monahan features the Feb. so issue of "Ski Bulletin" with his "Riding the Circuit of National Forest Ski Centers."
Tal Babcock is with the Continental Bank & Trust Co., Grand Central Terminal branch, lives in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, has daughter Betsy, 2 years, has become increasingly involved in community activities related to the war, yet "with it all I am looking forward to the Alumni Fund Campaign this Spring" A good man!
Irv Levitas writes from his office in Westwood, N. J.: "Not much news—l am adjunct attending in Pediatrics and Head of Endocrine Clinic at Hackensack, N. J. Hospital. Jacobitti '29 is also associated with the same institution in allergy and medical departments. For diversion I am the medical doctor to the Jersey Skeeters in the Eastern Hockey League and have performed a little surgery on some Dartmouth Alumni who play for the Boston Olympics in the same league. Occasionally think of some classmates particularly Beedie Brisbin who, I bet, will be governor of State of Vermont in a few years. Also Dick Brown who recently married. As I have three children he has quite a bit to do to catch up."
The unhappy news has recently come in that Rog Horton died last December 29th. An obituary notice appears in the Necrol- ogy section.
