Assistant Defender
April 1942

The recent rapid gearing of the country for war saw John B. Martin Jr. '31, one-time Rhodes Scholar and editor-in-chief of The Dartmouth, appointed executive assistant to James M. Landis, civilian defense director. He had previously been pressed into government service in the defense program and was serving in Washington as legal chief of the Industrial and Agricultural Machinery Section of the Office of Price Administration and Civilian Supply.

Before being named to the OPACS, Mr. Martin had taken leave of absence from private law practice to act as first assistant chief of the Securities Division of the Department of Commerce of Columbus, Ohio.
