SINCE THE ACTIVITIES of the Intramural Department form the only means for men not on varsity teams to take part in competitive athletics, the task of raising the general physical fitness of the College for war has fallen more heavily on the Department this year. The fact that there has been a 10% increase in participation of upperclassmen in intramural activities seems to indicate a growing conternities

sciousness of the need for good physical condition. For this reason the emphasis this year has been put on athletics. The program is being expanded continually and new additions made with this idea in mind.

Several unusual and interesting activities are numbered among the additions. "Tiedusting," a combination of map reading and cross-country running, was started this fall by Piltti Heiskanen, former lieutenant in the Finnish ski corps. The competition, won by Phi Gamma Delta, was confined to fraternities this year, but is expected to include dormitories next fall. Another sport limited at the start to fra-

was six-man soccer, brain child of soccer coach Tommy Dent and Mr. Delahanty. Won by Psi Upsilon, this sport met with immediate approval and promises to become more popular when extended to include dormitories.

Some idea of the extent of the work of the Intramural Department can be gained from the following list of activities on the winter schedule: hockey, basketball, volleyball, squash, handball, skiing, skating, swimming, bowling, boxing, and wrestling. Also included in the fraternity schedule are the bridge tournaments, debating, and play contests. The graduate schools are included in football, basketball, volleyball, and baseball, and group winners in these sports are brought together in elimination contests to determine the College champions.

At present the standings are based on results up to February, and new standings will not be determined until later this month. So far, Phi Kappa Psi leads the fraternities with 126.5 points, Beta Theta Pi is second with 96.5, and Delta Tau Delta is third with 94.4. In the dormitories Richardson Hall leads with 112.8, North Topliff is second with 109.2.
