Spirit Not Enough

To THE EDITOR: I wish to comment briefly on Judge McKinlay's letter, which you headlined: "Need Spirit, Not Teeth."

In the last war my tentmate in a Marine Corps training camp was equipped with a spirit which prompted him to travel 1500 miles daycoach on a box of crackers in order to enlist. On the target range a right molar began to bother him. He shifted his Springfield and won an expert rifleman medal shooting left-handed. Then he was taken to the sickbay. The rest of us sailed for France to perform useful if undistinguished service. My friend had to go home from training camp. Despite his magnificent spirit, the government's investment in him was a loss.

"Good Luck"

To THE EDITOR: I would like through your courtesy to extend an apology and an explanation to a great many alumni who have been kind enough to send me personal greetings and messages, in letters requesting transcripts of records, to which I have been unable to reply. We have done everything possible in the Dean's office to prepare and send out without delay the transcripts required by students and alumni entering the armed services and defense industries. The volume of such requests has been overwhelming and it has. been physically impossible to write personal letters to be enclosed with the records sent out each day. Even to scribble a note to say "good luck," "congratulations," or "thanks for the kind regards," has been more than we could manage on many days.

I hope those who have felt that the lack of any cordial response has indicated a lack of interest or a lack of appreciation will accept this explanation of the fact that I have very reluctantly sacrificed the luxury of personal correspondence to retain some measure of efficiency in the Dean's office.

Camp Lee, Virginia

To THE EDITOR: It will be much appreciated if Dartmouth men assigned to Camp Lee will register at the USO-Traveller's Aid upon arrival. This location for alumni registration is in the old N & W Station on West Washing Street, one block off Sycamore. USO officers have expressed their willingness to cooperate in this plan which is designed to bring Dartmouth men together and to permit some of us who are now located at Camp Lee to welcome newcomers. Might not this same plan be followed at other army camps?
