Charles H. Brown '35, 28-year old reporter for the Pittsburgh PostGazette, believes in doing things the hard way. Instead of applying to his local enlistment office and taking pot luck on assignment in the armed forces or instead of using what influence he could muster in Washington to get himself a commission, he used his Washington drag to get the toughest job the War Department has on tap right now—a private in the "guinea pig" outfit being sent to the West to find out how American men and machines can operate under desert conditions.
Private Brown used majors, colonels and generals to cut red tape and in 24 hours had a special Army order that permitted him to sign up on April 3 in the first armored corps at Fort Benning, Ga. Said Major W. F. Nee of the Army ground forces, "That chap knew what he wanted. We were glad to help him get it and the Army was glad to get a good man."
