War Activities Filmed
August 1942

WAR ACTIVITIES at Dartmouth College this summer were photographed by the United States Film Service from July 10 to 13 as part of a Government-sponsored movie of what American colleges and universities are contributing to the war effort. George J. Gercke '24, one of the founders of the unit which now operates under the office of Elmer Davis, accompanied the director and camera crew to Hanover.

In addition to "color" shots of the Dartmouth campus, the film unit took movies of a student-faculty discussion of post-war problems, led by Prof. John Pelenyi, former Hungarian Minister to the United States; another classroom sequence staged by Prof. Arthur Wilson and his students in Democratic Thought; an outdoor class held on the lawn of Dartmouth Hall by Prof. Herbert F. West '22; a student farm-aid trip in the Hanover region; and some phases of Dartmouth's wartime physical training program.

Activities at Dartmouth will be used in the film as representative of what the undergraduate, liberal arts college is contributing. The Government short will be shown in movie houses throughout the country.
