A MEETING OF THE SPECIAL COMMITTEE appointed by the Alumni Council to report on a memorial to President Eleazar Wheelock was held in Boston November 12. The group, headed by Philip S. Marden '94, former alumni trustee of the College and now associate editor of the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE, was charged by the Council with development of suggestions for the ultimate establishment of an appropriate memorial to the founder of the College, and recognition of outstanding incidents in Dartmouth's history. 1 TAT
The proposal originated with James W. Newton 'B6 who is a member of the committee. All members were present at the Boston meeting including, in addition to Mr. Marden and Mr. Newton, Leon B. Richardson 'oo, William C. Hill 'O2, Francis L. Childs 'O6, Paul Sample '2O, Sidney C. Hayward '26 and J. Fredrick Larson, College Architect.
In discussing the need for a Wheelock Memorial in Hanover, which was recognized by the Secretaries Association in its earlier discussions of the project, the committee agreed that the proposed Dartmouth Center offers the most desirable location.
Plans for the building which will house a new auditorium, little theater, and facilities for expanded activity in music and radio have been perfected. It is hoped that construction of the Dartmouth Center and fruition of the project will not be long delayed after the war.
The committee also voted to ask Mr. Larson and Mr. Sample to study suitable memorial features, in mural and statuary forms, to be planned for the Foyer and other sections of the Dartmouth Center. Upon receiving the report the committee will submit, recommendations to the Alumni Council.
As announced earlier, suggestions from alumni on any aspects of the proposed Wheelock Memorial will be welcomed and may be sent to Mr. Marden, 84 Fairmount Street, Lowell, Massachusetts.
