An explanation of the Class of 1936 Memorial Fund: December 5, 1942
Mr. Halsey C. Edgerton, Treasurer Dartmouth College Hanover, New Hampshire
Dear Mr. Edgerton:
The Executive Committee of the Class of 1936, Dartmouth College has voted to establish a fund designated as "Class of 1936 Memorial Fund" in honor of those men from our class who have lost their lives while serving our country during the present war. The fund has been opened and contributions will be received until some undetermined date after the end of hostilities. This fund is subject to the following conditions:
1. The Class of 1936 hereby gives to the Trustees of Dartmouth College the sum of $177.25, which with additions made thereto shall constitute a spe- cial class fund to be known as the "Class of 1936 Memorial Fund."
2. The fund will be increased hereafter by the contributions made by the members of the Class of 1936 as additions to the fund.
3. The principal of the fund is to be held by the Trustees of Dartmouth College as a separate fund, invested with the College Associated Endowments, until the 25th Reunion of the Class of 1936 in 1961, when it is to be applied for the benefit of the College in such way as the Executive Committee of the Class of 1936 may direct.
4. The income from the fund until the 25th Reunion in 1961 is to be credited to the principal of the fund, such income being the same rate of income which is used in the distribution of income to the other funds in Associated Endowments.
5. Records of the individual contributions will be kept by the Treasurer or Acting Treasurer of the Class of 1936 and will be available upon request to the proper officers of Dartmouth College.
6. All of the above conditions may be changed at any time in the future by agreement between a 2/3 majority of the Executive Committee of the Class of 1936 of Dartmouth College and the proper officers of Dartmouth College.
This Agreement shall become effective immediately upon acceptance by the interested parties as evidenced by their signatures.
Very truly yours, John E. Morrison (signed) Treasurer
This letter is hereby considered an agreement and is accepted by: Dartmouth College Class of 1936, Dart. College by by Halsey C. Edgerton John E. Morrison, Jr. (signed) (signed) Treasurer Treasurer Norbert Hofman, Jr. (signed) 1st Assistant Secretary

Under the heading of Unfinished Business (from our last column) comes a big batch of mail and news which we haven't been able to relay up to now. Some of the items are undoubtedly old; but probably you'd rather have them old than not at all. The amount we have to say and the space in which we can say it are in anything but direct proportion. So, we'll get back to that 7 point type (grab your goggles) and dig in....
Lee McGonagle writes: "About two months ago (sometime in July), my wife, daughter who is now three and myself moved to Seattle where I am a claim investigator for Travelers Ins. Co. We've been out on the West coast for about a year now and are thoroughly sold on it. Received a 3A classification a short time ago, but expect to be in the service before many months are past to help push over Hitler & Hirohito." .... And from Charlie Brooks: "Still in Gardner (Mass.) sales-managering for Conant-Ball. Saw the Holy Cross game and Ralph Colby. Tri Kap's 100th Anniversary is this weekend (10/2). I plan to attend. Should be quite an eventful affair." .... From Sioux Falls, S. D., Ray Builter wrote: "This is certainly a long, long way from home and definitely lacks the charm of New England. Just at present the rainy season in South Dakota is in progress and the mud is terrific. Was drafted on July 8 and spent a few weeks in Miami Beach before I was shipped up here. This is the radio school for the Air Force, so I am spending 7 hours a day in class studying theory and code. If all goes well, should be out of here by Xmas. From there on, it's a dark mystery."
Boyce Price "received a commission as 2nd It., Corps of Engineers, in June. Assigned to Staff and Faculty, Engineer School, Ft. Belvoir, Va." He's teaching officer candidates and expects more active service erelong Our thanks to Mrs. JoeCarson for bringing us up to date on the activities of her hubby, Lt. (j.g.) Joe: "Joe has been in the Navy since the first of July. From July 1 to about Sept. 6 he was at the U. S. Naval Hospital in Brooklyn. Then, on Sept. 13 he left to join the Advance Group, Amphibious Force, Atlantic Fleet. A cable has been received telling of his safe arrival at his destination. You can always reach Joe through me at 41 Woodrow St., West Hartford, Conn." .... Thanks, too, for the Nov. 5 communique from Mrs. Vic Kiarisis: "This is just to let you know that on September 26, the stork paid a visit to Lt. & Mrs. Victor Kiarsis, Bradford, Mass. It was a girl (not a Dartmouth pitcher, but perhaps another Dartmouth catcher!)—Karen Ann Kiarsis. Vic is still at Camp Pickett, Va. Joe Urban '39 lives next door to us so we have our own cozy Dartmouth gathering when Vic's here on leave. Dartmouth men have a great spirit and loyalty which extends to the wives also." ....Lt. Johnny Hardham saw Vic several times when stationed at Camp Pickett. As of 9/23, however, Johnny was stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga. He's an instructor in sanitation, hygiene and organization and tactics of medical units at the Infantry School there
From Cliff Roe: "Married Doris Jean Harvey, Michigan '40 on May 16, 1942. Got 1-A classification about six weeks later, and was ordered to report for physical in August. Minor operation same month and deferment until this month. (October). In the interim, approached both Army & Navy Intelligence. At present, a commission in the Navy seems to be a sure bet. And all this because the Dept. of Justice decided not to continue their policy of deferment! (I'm an Immigrant Inspector in that Dept.) It's just as well, 'cause I had decided to enlist anyhow. Oh yes I have a prospective member for class of 1960 coming up this Spring!" .... LouWelt has been working for the Detroit Ordnance District, Ammunition Branch since last January. His family consists of one wife with Junior expected in March John Marsh has his application in for a commission in the Naval Reserve and hopes to be sent to Hanover for training. He has entered his second son, Alexander Minor, in the class of 1964 A new address for your records: Capt. T. H. Lane, 0-388239, Med. Det; 503 Parachute Inf., A.P.O. 3299, c/o Postmaster, San Francisco, Cal Paul Hessler is still Ass't Treasurer of Hessler, Inc., in Wilmington, Del. Paul was classified 3-A, but is giving a lot of time to the job of Publicity Chairman for the Industrial Salvage Committee. That, says Paul, is the closest he's come to any war work, except for Plane Spotting Bob Paterson is working hard in the Carmera Works of Eastman Kodak in Rochester, N. Y. figuring production costs on war products. He and Catrina are now the proud parents of a son, Robert Henry, born last March 19 Norm Sherrypromoted to the rank of Sergeant on October Ist. .... Morrie Stein, a temporary resident at New York's Dartmouth Club, is connected with the WPB, Copper Branch, Copper Recovery Corp., in N.Y.C. His family now includes a wife and two youngsters For the time being, Al Momenee is in the Chemical Warfare Service specifically in the Decontamination Company (which cleans the way for the infantry in gas attacks). He's stationed at Camp Bowie, Texas Ralph Earl is in the Planning Department of the Curtiss Propeller Division of Curtiss-Wright Corp., in Clinton, N. J. .... Pete Fitzherbert finds his work as Engineer for Eastern Underwriter Inspection Bureau a lot different from the finance business, but he's glad that he's connected with some government operations. .... Barney Hoffman has recently accepted a Junior Inspector's job at Plant No. 2, Glenn L. Martin Co., Baltimore, Md.
Not in several months have we received reports of any '36 get-togethers in various sections of the country. Of course, there must have been the usual informal beer and bull sessions. But as far as honest-to-goodness class dinners are concerned, the New York contingent still sets the pace. On November 18, for example, Paul Lynch arranged a shebang at the Dartmouth Club. Realizing that our New York delegation is fast dwindling, he signed up with '3s and between the two classes, twenty men turned up. On our side of the table were: Frank Wetstein, Gil Balkam, Ed Brooks, Art Levin, John Weisman, Ross Martindale, Semi Soule, Jocko Morrison, Paul Lynch and Norb Hofman What's cooking for '36 dinners in other parts?
Here's a letter from Bob Fernald: "I am no longer in the Market Research Department of Lever Brothers Co. I left in July to accept a position in the War Department, Office of the Quartermaster General where I am currently engaged in estimating the Army's food requirements for the next few years. I have company here in the presence of Red Pounder who chases all over the country to maneuvers for the Research and Development Branch as a Field Observer, and Bill Ferguson who is doing Stock Control Work. Dartmouth Night here was a great success. The Mayflower Hotel was the scene of the action and the bar did a rushing business. I found three fellow members of our class at the affair: Fred Qonnerman, of WPB's Machine Tool Branch and a proud father as of the week of Oct. 18. Barry Sullivan, who read the Club History; and Dr., or should I say Lt. Bill Stimson, resplendent in the uniform of the U. S. Public Health Service which he explains was part of the Coast Guard."
