The Secretary has learned of the serious illness of Classmate Welch, in a letter from Classmate Gage. Welch suffered a shock the first week of July, at his Amesbury home. His brother-in-law, Charles R. Jewell, also of Amesbury, reported that he had lost the power of speech and was evidently growing weaker. A later report from Mrs. Jewell is much more encouraging. A niece visiting him at the hospital found him much stronger, and he spoke so she could understand him. He had been able to leave his room to go into the sun parlor and his appetite was good. The Secretary has received from Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. Burnett of Plymouth, Mass., the announcement of the marriage of their daughter Dorothy, and Walter Ernest Allen, August 15. The Secretary recently enjoyed a call from classmates Hadlock and Junkins. "Dan" was enjoying his annual visit at Sydney's home at Hanover. He seemed as husky as ever, and he has not changed a hair in his appearance in the last twenty years. There should be an honorary degree, D.A.L. (Doctor of. the Art of Living) and he should have it. Sydney holds his own wonderfully. He has been badly treated by the powers controling the distribution of gasoline. Doctor Sanborn and Charlie Conn have been enjoying their annual outing in New Hampshire, the former at the Crawford House, and the latter at Hotel Farragut, Rye Beach. "Sonny" Gage lunched with him, and reports him to be in excellent health, doing nine holes of golf daily. We suspect Dr. Sanborn was engaged in the same pastime. "Sonny" Gage plans to go to St. Petersburg, Fla., early in November. The Secretary will go to Clearwater, Fla., the second week in December. Gage has resigned as governor of the Society of Colonial Wars in the state of New Hampshire, an office of much distinction which he had held for several years. The death of Mrs. Wallace, widow of Classmate James Burns Wallace, was recently announced in the news. Mrs. Wallace had been an invalid for several years, living in the retirement of a nurse's home.
