EXCEPT IN TWO particulars the civilian class of 1947 follows the same general statistical pattern as that set by preceding entering classes. In addition to being the smallest class to enter the College since the turn of the century, the average age of the 1947 freshman is 17.3 years, considerably less than the 18.06 years which has been the average for the last decade. The youngest member of the present class is 16 years and one month.

This year's freshman class of 185 has the largest percentage of sons of Dartmouth alumni of any class in the last six years. Twenty-one per cent of this year's fresh- men are second generation Dartmouth men, as compared to 16% in the class of 1946; 1945. 15%: and 1944, 12%. In addition to this number, 111 of the '47's are sons of graduates of 42 other colleges.

The geographic distribution, covering 23 states and one foreign country, is much the same as in former years, the largest number, 46, being from New York state. Following this are Massachusetts, with 41 representatives; Connecticut, 17; New Jersey, 15; and New Hampshire, 14. Seven states have a representation of one person. The only foreign country represented is Canada, with one student from there.

Out of the total 185, 104 students are from public schools and 81 are from private institutions. The largest group from any one of the 131 secondary schools represented comes from Deerfield Academy, which has sent 8 men here this year.

The most popular vocation with the '47's is medicine. Thirty-nine members of the class have listed this as their choice of career, while 31 have signified their desire to be "businessmen," 28 have chosen to be engineers, 16 wish to be lawyers, and 11 have declared their intentions of becoming scientists.
