A DEFICIT OF $11,948.49 in its operations for the fiscal year 1942-43 was reported by the Dartmouth College Athletic Council last month. Total income for the year was $130,718.77, a drop of $56,000 from the previous year, but operating expenses were correspondingly less and the year's deficit was approximately the same as the 1941-42 loss of 113,597.56. The final figures for the past year are more favorable than anticipated when the budget was drawn up.

Varsity football had gross receipts of $113,007.88 and expenses of $62,124.96 for a surplus of $50,882 92, enough to cover the deficits of the other eleven sports carried by the Athletic Council. The 1942 football receipts were nearly $40,000 below those of the year before, and the net profit was $23,000 lower.

Administrative expenses of the Athletic Council were markedly lower than for 1941-42, dropping from $21,899.73 to $15,790.95.

Among the major sports other than football, basketball again came closest to paying its own way. Its receipts were down by about $7,000, however, while expenses remained the same. Income for all major sports fell off, but through economy of expenditures, baseball and track posted smaller deficits than for the preceding year and hockey remained about the same. Freshman sports, which involved a net cost of over $16,000 in 1941-42, were dropped during the past year.
