One often hears spoken words of praise about that "Dartmouth Spirit" which is so prevalent among the Alumni, but ever so often one learns of that spirit being captured by another member of the family, of some alumnus. I recently received a letter from the wife of one of the five men in our class who gave his life for his country, and Ina Smith has that same Dartmouth spirit that Steve did and that young Stevie will some day come to know. I would like to quote this letter, as it was in reality written to Dartmouth 1936: "At this time my son and I wish to contribute to the Memorial Fund in memory of Stephen W. Smith Jr., my husband, and Stevie's Daddy, whom he never saw. I know well how much Dartmouth meant to Steve and hope that someday she will mean as much to his son. Sincerely, Ina S. Smith."

A letter from Frank Kappler's wife states that after eight months at Camp Hale, Colo., Frank is now in the Aleutians. Early in October she had a letter from him written in August, in which he stated that the three adjectives the Army allows you to write were: alive, well-fed, and happy, and that he was alive, but knowing his appetite, she could understand Stan Walker is a lieutenant (jg) in the Coast Guard and at sea most of the time Briant Patterson is a corporal in the Air Corps A 1 Gibney is still commanding that subchaser and admits it might be quite different, standing a night watch with his new daughter, from his usual one on board ship. Gib also comes through with the news that Doug Miller is commanding a PC boat in the Carribbean, Stan Osgood is in Key West instructing at Sound School, and George Tillinghast is Ships Service Officer, also in Key West.
