I have recently received heart-warming letters from Frank Austin, Jesse Marden, "Tommy" Thompson, Joel Harley, Watson Baker, Class President Wilson and others.
From the depths of his scientific mind Austin predicts that the supply of gasoline and oil in this country will be exhausted in 1953- In view of this, he believes it is shortsighted to plan on extensive airplane service for freight and passenger transportation after the war. He declares, "There is no doubt more gas is being consumed in training than is used on the battle fronts, and a large amount was sent to Davy Jones by subs." Speaking of alcohol as motor fuel, Austin says, "There is not arable land enough on earth to furnish sufficient vegetable growth to provide motive power for onequarter of our automobiles. Alcohol has but onehalf the power of gasoline." He declares also,
"There is not sufficient arable land on earth to raise sufficient food for the inhabitants. If there were not millions of people starving to death each year you and I would go hungry." "1953," he says, "is a Judgment year since it is the multiple of 9, the Judgment number. It is the end date of the interior passage in the Great Pyramid." This suggests to me the Rasicrucian propaganda. Am I right, Frank?
Wilson relates that, in his city of Hartford, teeming thousands live in a dimout from dark to dawn. "It makes the city look weird enough." He says, however, "We have enough to eat and heat enough to be comfortable, so we have no complaint, but things have changed a lot since Hannah died."
"Tommy" is wintering in Salt Lake City, contrary to his custom of hibernating in California. His daughter, Hildegarde, keeps his house for him while her militant husband fights America's battle. He writes, "I have great hopes that as a result of this war, if it lasts till the American people suffer some real hardships, the American people as a nation will rediscover their soul and permit it to develop in some good rich soil."
Jesse speaks of a message from Athens saying, "We are getting along." He hopes the relief of Greece may come by next Christmas.
Grandpa Joe Ford is still accumulating grandchildren. His latest is nine-monthsold Virginia Cook of Libertyville, a suburb of Chicago. His score to date is four granddaughters and two grandsons.
