My spies, who are everywhere, caught me during my August cruise to give me a quick report on several classmates in the Sarasota area. The Blanchards: Bob is fine, Page not too well, as we know. Bob Chittim is fine, Marge "so-so." JackFitzpatrick is well, but Edith has had serious eye problems. Ave and Julie Gould are fine. Ave is a great guy but so busy with other activities that he can't attend most Dartmouth functions. Charlie Rauch's wintertime activities are somewhat limited by his health, but he participates as much as he can. BoofPerkins not too well. Billie OK. Dean andMary Wiggin: "great."
Two of my cruisemates, who see Charlie Rauch at the Au Sable Club each summer, confirm that he is on oxygen but gets out regularly and is a pillar of the Episcopal church there. They also mentioned the well-being of Bill Fenton and friend Nancy.
Also on shipboard we had an attractive couple who cruise regularly as bridge professionals, giving lectures and lessons. At lunch one day they talked about the Stayman Convention. I asked if they knew Sam Stayman. "Sure," they said, "well, no, not personally." They couldn't have been more impressed if I'd mentioned Nelson Rockefeller as a classmate.
Another good note from Doris McClory, this time from Berlin. She was about to leave for a trip on the Elbe River. Having been in Paris this summer and Woodstock this fall, she's creeping up on the Jacobs and Horns (and me) for the Class Traveler title.
As we diminish in number, it's not every month that one of us publishes a letter to the DAM editor, so it's worth mentioning that page four of the Summer 1992 issue has letters from two classmates, each speaking out on an his own expertise: i.e., Carl Haffenreffer on dogs, and Fran Horn on mentors.
Finally, a deep bow to Milt Mclnnes on a distinguished quarter century of service to his class and college, as the editorship of The Thirtyteer passes from his shoulders to those of Bob Keene. Fortunate is any class to have such talented and willing members on its rolls!
