CAMP DEVENS INDUCTEES ATTEND BOSTON ALUMNI DINNER
IT WAS ALL DUE TO CHANCE. Thirty-tWO classmates who graduated in December reported together at Fort Devens. They went through processing as a unit and ended up together in Company F. Major Herbert S. Potter '15, Devens personnel officer, happened to visit the home of Lt. Maeck, brother of one of the Dartmouth men, William Maeck '43, on the same day.
Major Potter, it is reported, was thinking of just one thing—the Boston alumni dinner that evening. As a result he explained the situation to the commanding officer who turned out to be enthusiastic and cooperative. A directive was sent to the boys in Company F who were issued the dress uniforms of Army privates. They were detailed for the evening to the Copley Plaza Hotel where the group was cordially welcomed and heard President Hopkins address 500 Dartmouth men of Boston and vicinity.
