DANIEL WEBSTER AND DARTMOUTH is an article beginning on page 9 of unusual historical value and one that provides a background of new and interesting information on the Supreme Court arguments in which Webster saved the College. Professor Richardson's Brief Biographies ofBuildings continues with Fayerweather Hall, the subject this month, page 12. HanoverBrowsing, Professor West's monthly section on recommended reading, will be found on page 13 and his new departments Laureled Sons ofDartmouth, page 14, and 'Round the GirdledEarth, page 15, are other features of this issue.

The number of Dartmouth men in war service continues to mount every day. Since publication of our March issue 530 alumni have gone into uniform making a total in the armed forces of 5065. Likewise the large group of Dartmouth men in full-time civilian war service in Washington and elsewhere continues to increase with a total of 279 now listed in the Alumni Records Office. The War Directory begins this month on page 17.

Sunday in the Country, page 21, is an account of unusual activity of two Dartmouth students who are leaders of the religious and social life of the neighboring Hanover Center community. Other regular departments are Books by Dartmouth Men, page 20, AlumniFund Mailbag, 22, News of the College, 23, Undergraduate Chair, 27, Green Teams, 29, and Alumni Notes, 33.

The Cover Thayer School's materials testing laboratory is the scene of this month's cover picture taken by George Higgins. Those engaged in testing the comparative strength of concrete cylinders in the School's new and completely equipped building are, left to right: John M. Hughes '44, Prof. Joseph J. Ermenc, assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering, William Harrison '44, M. D. Corner '44, and S. W. Holmes '44.
