THE Convocation Address delivered by President Dickey at the Webster Hall exercises opening Dartmouth's 182nd year made a deep impression upon the students and faculty members who heard it, and it also received wide attention in the press. The ALUMNI MAGAZINE presents the full text of the President's important address, beginning on Page 15.

In Newfoundland this summer, Prof. Elmer Harp Jr., Curator of Anthropology in the Dartmouth Museum, continued to dig for the story of the extinct Cape Dorset Eskimo. His work as cultural sleuth provides the basis for his interesting article, Detective Story fromthe Far North, which begins on Page 17.

The MAGAZINE introduces this month a new feature, Dr. Tucker Speaking (Page 25), which will present portions of the chape talks, writings and other addresses of William Jewett Tucker, President of Dartmouth College from 1893 to 1909. These excerpts have their own intrinsic value, but they will also serve to make better known to all alumni one of the great Presidents in the Wheelock Succession—the man who fashioned the modern Dartmouth and who left behind him a deposit of recorded utterances which, notable for their timeliness when delivered, have now, 50 years later, the quality of timelessness.

Regular monthly features:

The College 11

The Undergraduate Chair 20

The Faculty 24

With Big Green Teams 27

News from Clubs and Classes 31

Associated School News 82

In Memoriam 83

The Cover Shadows on the white walls of Reed Hall (1840) caught the eye of Staff Photographer Adrian Bouchard early this fall, resulting in this month's striking cover shot.
