37 Late Afternoon Thoughts on the Twentieth Century
At the special convocation opening the new Sophomore Summer Program, held in the Bema on a pleasant June afternoon, one of the country's most admired scientific philosopher-authors discusses the major developments and problems that have shaped, and continue to shape, the mod- ern world.

44 The Art of Making Things Right
The director of the Dartmouth Student Workshops, where undergraduates and others have first-rate facilities and instruction, writes about the liberal arts spirit motivating the program and about the educational value of designing and then actually making something in the studios devoted to woodworking, metal work, jewelry, glass, and pottery. The photographs by Nancy Wasserman '77 add a graphic story of students at work, making things right.

COVER An especially fine example of the work being done by students in the Design Workshops in Hopkins Center is the dropfront desk made by Tamar Buchsbaum '86 of Philadephia (in the photo above) who shows that the feminine touch counts for a lot. It was photographed for the cover by Bruce Cate, special instructor in metalworking.
