Dartmouth's snowbound baseball team opened its 1943 season in surprising fashion by shutting out Princeton's champion nine, 3 to o, and coming within a hair of taking the second game, lost 4 to 3, in the double-header at Princeton on April 16.
In the opening game, which started off the Eastern Intercollegiate League race, Ralph Bowman held the Tigers to three hits and gave Roy Talcott, Nassau mound ace, his second defeat in 19 league starts. Catcher Joe Quig's triple in the first inning with the bases loaded accounted for all three Dartmouth runs. Walks to Joe Vancisin and Jack Sayers and a single by Stan Zarod preceded Quig's mighty blow to the right field fence.
In the nightcap Ray Wolfe went to the mound for Dartmouth, while Jon Eide pitched for Princeton. It was a fairly even duel with both teams collecting six hits. The Tigers scored one run in each of the first two innings and the Indians tied the count with a pair in the sixth when George Pulliam's single followed a hit and two walks. Princeton got another pair of runs in the top of the seventh, and the Green came back with one tally and had the tying and winning runs on base when the final out was made.
Coach Tesreau's starting line-up was: Vancisin cf, Zarod 3b, Ash If, Sayers lb, Quig c, Donahue rf, Barrett 2b, Callan ss, and Bowman p. In the second game, Pulliam replaced Donahue in right field and Fessenden took Callan's place at shortstop.
