This column might better be called The Voice from the Wilderness, for at this point Hanover is a ghost town in every sense of the word. North Fayerweather, Wheeler, and Streeter are the only dorms open, and chances of meeting one of your 600 fellow students on the street are rather slim. We are "all books" this semester; three subjects a day every day allows us very little spare time. We aren't having quite the laughs we had in former times but that's to be expected now.
The Newsletter seems to have gone over very well, judging by the comments and replies which have come in. One little item which might be mentioned here is that the reaction to payment of the class dues could be animated greatly.
Many of us are up in the air these days but Andy Carstensen, Bill Porter, and Jim Doole are literally up in the air, for they have recently completed their basic flight training as part of the V-5 USNR training program. Bill was here in Hanover the other day all decked out in his palm beach summer uniform. Jim Doole also dropped in to let us know how great life in the Navy is. They are soon to go to Chapel Hill for the real grind. As further evidence of what a small world this is, I ran into Fred Covalt in Columbus. Hitherto he had not been heard from, but now we have him located in specialization school at Ohio State.
Bert Martin is now a second lieutenant and an instructor in Gunnery and Survey at Fort Bragg. He writes that if Prof. Robinson knew he was teaching math, he'd think the Army had gone to the dogs. We can't be in two places at once, so a correction on Bob Zildjian's address is in order. Far from being in the embryo department he is in the Anti-Aircraft Coastal Artillery. Sorry, Bob. John Jennings is applying those christies he learned on the New Hampshire hills to some Colorado snow with the ski troops at Camp Hale.
Of the '45s here now (approximately 200), nearly all will go into active duty around July first. It is hoped that the training will ensue right here in Hanover, for the Navy Indoctrination School is being discontinued this month. And with the influx of V-12 students soon to enter, Dartmouth will be a vital Naval training center.
