My wife and I sat down one recent night with the class information which we have, and compiled the following, which we feel may be of interest to you:
Of 618 members of the class, grads and non-grads, 461 are in the Armed Forces. This figure is 75% of the class. Of the 461, 316 have commissions, a percentage of 68. The list is split as follows: 143 in the Navy, 282 in the Army, 26 in the Marines, and 10 in the Coast Guard. The proportion of commissioned to noncommissioned has lessened in recent months as more and more of us respond to draft calls. The tendency has been for the number in the Army to increase in larger percentage than that in the other services.
The credit line this month goes to our ever busy class agent, Jack Rourke, who, in the middle of. a change in jobs (from CBS to Donahue 8c Coe) found time to get to Penn and Princeton, and to carry on the correspondence which is by far the largest of any we know of in the class.
Diz de Sieyes' wife Gina writes that S/Sgt. Diz is now the veteran of several raids as passenger on one of our bombers. .... Bob Austin took time out at the end of a summer of rest and recuperation on the shores of the Mediterranean to send us a good letter. He has run into A 1 Rosenthal (Ens. on LST), his old roommate Bob Jordan (ist Lt. with AA outfit) and Fred Batchelder (and Lt. on investigations for AMG). Bob at the time of writing was about ready to rejoin his company at the front.... Freddie Michel is piloting a P-40 out of African bases
.. .Phil McCoy is an ensign on a minesweeper "wintering among the less popular Alaskan resorts, gradually losing hair, teeth, and eyesight." Phil spent a while with a wholesale lumber outfit, then as a civilian he bought lumber for the ship-building program, ending up with a commission and minesweeper duty. Along the way he picked up a wife in the person of Phoebe Ferris, Smith '4l Cec Moore is back in Africa, north this time, with the Naval Air Transport Service. He had been with Pan-Am, I believe, and took that experience over into his new work. He and his flying "WASP bride find it difficult to maintain even a meager correspondence, what with both of them flying all over hell and back. Cec ran into Jack O'Brien in Brazil last July, and is stationed with Cal Sterling Correction, Ed Giorchino was listed last month as getting a DSC, which should have been the DFC. Although my civilian mind knows no difference, I understand there is a very important difference.
John "Willson is back in St. Albans, Vt., home from Poona, India, where he was stationed with the AFS. He is more or less expecting a draft call when he gets back on his feet 800 Hayden and his new wife are apartmented on Lake Merrit in Oakland, Calif., near enough to Whit Miller and wife,and Bob Hale for a get-together now and then.....
Chal Carothers, stationed at Philly as Personnel Officer in an Air Forces' storage depot, writes of attending the wedding of Kel Doyle and Virginia Newman of Sea Girt, N. J. Kel and Ginny spent what must have been a swell honeymoon in Hanover and environs. Kel is a first looie now and pitcher on his outfit's ball team. Chal also lets us in on George Sheldon's commission in the Field Artillery Capt. Jack Cowan, recently at Duke, spent some time in Holyoke and Hamp on a recent tour, which also took him to the Columbia game at Hanover and the Cornell game at Boston. He saw Sam Carver and John Burnap (now at Westover Field) and tipped a couple for the rest of us at Rahar's. Jack's report is, "No more steins at Rahar's, but the beer is_ still good. It was tragic to see fifteen Smith lassies sitting around with nothing to do." . . . .Don McCaffrey (Marine Capt.) is- back from active duty instructing at a Training Center. He and Priscilla popped in and out of Hanover, liked its still beautiful landscape, but felt a bit out of place, with all the salutes to re- turn, and the uproar of the training program there. Don urges cooperation from the class in securing dates for Gail Ann McCaffrey, who will be, he says, interested in likely looking Dartmouth men of the class of '63 Copper Nye has been busier than a man picking fly specks out of dashing home on emergency furlough to visit his sick wife, finishing up at OCS, and transferring to Spokane for further training in an officer's pool. . . . .Danny Sullivan is Gunnery Officer for a squadron of Liberators and is currently stationed at the Norfolk Naval Air been making ferry trips to many outlying points on the globe. . . . .Lt. (jg) Dean Carleton graduated from airship flight training at Lakehurst and is now running a blimp on anti-sub patrol;
A few of the class got to some of the games this fall. Reported at Penn were Jack Mac Donald, Dink Wiener and wife, A 1 Gutman, John Burnap, Fred Ewing and Jack Roueke. At Princeton were Harry Midgeley, Jordan Van Cleve, Don Schott, Gutman, Rourke, and Silverstein. Columbia was seen by Jack Cowan and Clint Clad, and Cornell at Boston had as spectators Cowan and Ray Helm. A couple of small class parties have been mentioned, but dates and attendance have not reached this north woods outpost as yet.
Art French writes from Philadelphia where he and his new wife Margaret are both interning at Philadelphia General Hospital. Margaret and Art spent their honeymoon, termed glorious by Art, in New Hampshire and Hanover. They had a short visit with Bob Storrs, Bill Sinclair, and Jack Schleicher, all interning at Mary Hitchcock. Bud Czerny and Frank Cline are interning with Art in Philly, and Lew Chipman is at the Naval Hospital there, but lives near enough to Art for an occasional get-together. .
WEDDINGS AND ENGAGEMENTS
Bob Bedell and Nina Peppard of Charleston, N. C., married Scotty Rogers and Louise Schickler of Cleveland Heights, married September 15 Danny Toan and Jane Noyes of Scarsdale, married October 23. They'll live in St. Augustine, where Danny is stationed with the Navy. . . . .Ham Dawes and Betty Gallien of Montclair, engaged. The wedding was scheduled for November 8 Fred Pillsbury and Elsie Hymon of Groton, Conn., married November 10 Earle Reingold and Irma Pearlmutter of Roxbury, Mass., engaged. Earle is now stationed at Amherst College.
SMITH '64 DEPARTMENT
Ens. and Mrs. Bill Hutchinson crashed through with Mary Ann on November 19..... - Ski Trooper Bud and Sue Raymond became the parents of a girl, "The Pride of the Mountain Regiment," born October 23 at Evanston, 111 And Sue Raymond reports that Bill and Mrs. Rothermel had a girl a few days ahead of them.
