Once again fall has come upon us almost before it was realized. The days are cool, the early mornings cold, and those soft September sunsets stream across the campus as beautiful as ever. It won't be long before we look across from Memorial Field at Velvet Rocks in all its autumn splendor.
The fast approaching end of the present semester numbers quite definitely the Dartmouth days of the few remaining '4s's. There are now 15 civilians, 15 Navy Medics, 5 Army Medics, 13 Sailors and 1 Marine left who are '4s's and of which only the Med students and about 5 civilians will be around when the new semester begins in November. Looks as if we were die-hards and hung on as long as possible, but soon Dartmouth will be almost entirely comprised of V-12 trainees, most of whom are recent high-school graduates or transfers from other places. The '4s's here now include: Navy-—Tom Candler, Bob Aldom, Craig Cain, Bob Anthony, Dave Davidson, Jim Eckels, Cline Mann, Bob Roberts, Fletcher Clark, Ralph Tyler, Vic Smith, Charlie Holt, Sam Spaulding, John Ruppe, Don Cole, Budy Thomas, Roland Beers, Bob Clark, Jim Dickson, Holden Farrar, Bill Hatt, Dave Kirkpatrick, Ed McCrum, Jerry Peacock, Fred Plum, Thayer Smith, Adair "Tex" White, Buell Kingsley. Warren Quimby is a Marine trainee. Howie Sawyer, Pete Beck, John Van Buren, Walt Rothwell and Pete Habein make up the Army medical student detachment. The following civilian '4s's are here at present: Ralph Blackburn, Jonathan Bursey, Lisle Carter, Jug Agry, George Ehinger, Warron Gillespie, Chan Harwood, Jim Knowles, Lawrence Levine, Vic Liota, Art Nichols, Ham Porter, Win Sargeant, Bill Schmitt, and Elmer Trumball.
The group of 11, V-12 sailors at Thayer School, leaves this October for Seabee-training and prospective commissions at Camp Endicott in Rhode Island. I will leave with them and Art Nichols has kindly consented to serve as your acting secretary with the assistance of Professor Gazeley until I am able to get my feet on the ground again. Art will be at Thayer School one more semester, and hopes to receive his Masters Degree in Civil Engineering some time in March. It has been the purpose of our Alumni MAGAZINE Column to answer individual letters through the news written in it each month. Of course, it is next to impossible to answer every letter or card individually, so I hope this past year of keeping you posted has met with your approval. Johnny Little did a good job for us with the Alumni Fund Drive and turned out some entertaining news letters. In the very near future I will mail out some double postcards, on which I hope you will write and return any news or information you have about yourselves or other classmates. It takes news to make news, so please write in whenever you can—the mail receipt box in the COSO office is depreciating rapidly because of lack of use.
