This is officially the first issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE on our two-year subscription. Yet it isn't our column's debut, for it has appeared monthly since April. Due to material shortages, etc., we have to make this short, so don't run away yet.
It is a real thrill to see the change which has come over Dartmouth this month. There are about 2000 of us, all marching in the same way, to the same place, at the same time. One colorful little item in connection with V-12 was Campion's record sale of "Dartmouth T shirts" to the new recruits. The new fellows bought the Dartmouth labeled shirts and stationery while the former students preferred the U. S. Navy on their articles.
A card from Steve Weatherby informs us that he and about 14 other Dartmouth fellows, stationed at Houghton, Mich., are soon to be sent to Hollywood They're not very much excited.
"Monk" Wayne Morgan finally has been located at Oklahoma A. & M. Johnny Loper ROTC is at the University of California, as is Emmet Fallon. Andy Ten Eyck is at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., where he hasn't done much except fight floods. ... . Jack Carroll, member of the Executive Council, has entered Annapolis and is rooming with a '46 Johnny Callaghan will be cheering opposite him next fall, for he has entered West Point.
Many Dartmouth '45s are at Keesler field including Al Gruer, Ab Davis, Johnny Hartshorn, Bill Gauntlett, Dick Elston, Bob Heath and Bill Merrill. We haven't heard from Bill Merrill since he rushed off last winter Harry Figgie held out for a long time, but he was finally drafted not long ago.
The Axis has lost many planes since the African campaign began and at least one of them was taken care of by one of our classmates. Sgt. Roderick Shepherd AAF was credited with shooting down one ME- 109 over Sicily on May 12, 1943. And that is something to look up to Ed Hubbard seems to be having his woman trouble even at Pensacola...... Tom Maver is stationed at Camp McCoy, Wis.
That'll have to be all for now—space and time, you know.
ENS. CHARLES W. MURPHY '45 is a recent graduate of the Naval Air Training Center at Corpus Christi, Texas.
