THE LARGEST ATTENDANCE of any meeting in recent years was recorded when the Dartmouth Alumni Council gathered in Boston on October 13. President Henry E. Atwood '13 of Minneapolis presided at the full day's session. A total of 26 present members out of 35 were joined by 36 former members and officers of the College.
It was a keen disappointment to the Council that President Hopkins was forced to return to Hanover from Boston the day before the meeting to take care of a cold. In the entire history of the Council since it was founded in 1913 under the guidance of Mr. Hopkins there have been very few meetings without the President in attendance. The Council sent a message to him saying that no meeting "is right without your presence."
Leslie W. Snow '12, chairman of the Council's Nominating Committee, recommended renomination of Harvey P. Hood '18 as Alumni Trustee of the College. His name, approved by the Council, goes to the Board of Trustees as the Council's nominee submitted in behalf of the alumni.
Following approval given at the June meeting to the plan of establishing a Dartmouth-Navy Alumni Association, the Council last month gave its endorsement to steps now being taken in Hanover by the large unit of Navy and Marine students. Undergraduate members of the V-12 Unit have elected an executive committee to which will be added men who have completed their terms at Dartmouth. The affiliation with Dartmouth will be offered about 4500 trainees who have or are now members of the Dartmouth V-12 Unit. There will be no compulsion or obligation placed upon them to accept membership in the new Dartmouth alumni group. Replies have been received from about 2300 V-12 students, the great majority of whom indicate their desire to have some type of permanent association with the College after the war.
Other major matters of business discussed by the Council and reported by the chairmen of several committees were: 1945 Alumni Fund by Joshua A. Davis 27, new chairman, and Albert I. Dickerson '3O, Fund secretary; Admissions and Schools by Philip H. Chase '07, chairman; Class Gifts, Edward E. Martin '19; Parents' Committee, Percy O. Dorr 02, chairman; Wheelock Memorial, Philip S. Marden '94, chairman; Alumni Club Activities, Robert M. Stecher '19, in behalf of Clifford A. Randall '27, chairman; Dartmouth Vocational Plan, Francis J. Neef, Director of the Personnel Bureau and Donald W. Cameron '35, Associate in Placement in the Personnel Bureau; Dartmouth Athletic Council, James M. Mathes 'n, chairman, William H. McCarter '19, Director of Athletics, and Earl Brown, head coach of football and basketball.
Professor W. S. Messer chairman of the College's Special Committee on Academic Adjustments led an interesting and informative discussion on plans for the return to Hanover of many Dartmouth servicemen who are now on leave of absence from college for war service.
In addition to members mentioned above the following representatives of District and alumni groups present were:
