AFTER the school year windup described in the June letter, the Thayer School was a relatively quiet place until August 30 when our second-year students returned for the "September summer session." Summer activities included inventorying, organizing, and assembling equipment for the electrical meas- urements, circuits, and communications lab- oratories by Bob Paulson '49 and Ray Evans '49 under the direction of Professors Wood and Morgan; the building of a polariscope by Chuck Osborn TT'49 under the direction of Professor Ed Brown '35 using the funds re- ceived as a memorial to Charles R. Main '08; the continuation of the Richardson model bridge study by Ed Byrkit '4B and Professor John Minnich '29; continued maintenance, conditioning and organizing of the Manufac- turing Processes Laboratory by Technician Larry Goldthwaite; improving testing set-ups in the Internal Combustion Engine Labora- tory and installation of Refrigeration Lab- oratory equipment under the direction of Professor Moulton; and preparation for the publication of the 1948 Thayer School Reg- ister by the office and library staff under the direction of the writer. Aside from the above and miscellaneous minor activities, all has been quiet here.
Incidentally, if any of you Thayer School alumni who read this column are reminded that you haven't yet returned the Thayer School Register questionnaire, X hope you'll stop right here and do it. We'd hate to have to say "Information not received" but that's what may have to be done if we are to meet the printer's October 15 deadline. We have high hopes of getting the Register into the mails before the Christmas rush and we'll all have to move fast to do it.
J. Albert Wood who came to Thayer School as Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineer- ing in the spring of 1946 has been appointed Professor of Electrical Engineering. His work in organizing the electrical laboratories, in setting up the new electrical engineering cur- riculum and establishing new courses, and his teaching and conduct of his classes have been of a high order of excellence and in the best Thayer School tradition.
Bob Keane '4B has been appointed Instruc- tor in Civil Engineering for 1948-49. Bob re- ceived his Master's degree in the civil engi- neering curriculum last June, made a fine scholastic record here and we are looking for- ward to having him on the faculty.
Ed Brown '35, Professor of Civil Engineer- ing, has been granted a leave of absence for the second semester of this year, his first se- mester free of teaching since he joined the faculty in 1937, including the three-semester years of the war period.
